-- SAMANTHA ALICE RICHARDS !
-- NAME: Samantha Alice Richards-Defoy. -- NICKNAMES: Sammy, or Sam. -- AGE & BIRTHDAY: Twenty-Four. August 11th, 1986. -- BIRTH PLACE: San Francisco, California. -- ORIENTATION: Lesbian. -- OCCUPATION: Guidance Counsellor for Capeside High. -- PLAYED BY: Amber Benson.
-- PERSONALITY !
-- HELPFUL ; That’s a bit of an understatement. Normally, a person you would find helpful is the type who provides assistance to others, like holding the door open for someone or letting someone pass you on the highway. Samantha goes a bit above and beyond, she’s the type to give her leftovers away to people who don’t have a lot of food, or to volunteer afterschool in some of the extracurricular activities. She feels a general need to help people in their low times. Her want to help people is what got her into the counselling business, she needed to be involved with people who didn’t really have a lot of good influences in their lives to help them from a young age to be the kind of people she knew they could be. Samantha felt that people especially ones who were on the path to doing something bad or messing up, especially deserved a second chance, and she was the one to give it to them before they got too out of control, while they still could be helped.
-- SENSITIVE ; Most people get offended when people say something less then kind to them, most people however don’t get upset to the point of crying. Samantha has always been a little emotional when it comes to every little thing that goes wrong in life, even if it’s something that would seem insignificant to any other person. She is a little sensitive, actually quite a bit sensitive. That’s what puzzles some people, how she can be in her line of work and get so upset easily. She does try to keep any tears inside of her for when she gets home, then she can cry. It is still hard for her to handle, especially since she has to do it alone. Samantha doesn’t rely on any of her friends or family members to help her cope with anything, she basically does it alone, that’s a reason behind how overemotional she is, if she had someone to comfort her, she probably wouldn’t take everything so hard.
-- INTROVERTED ; It’s not that she wants to be so quiet and keep herself from other people, she just doesn’t really know how to get herself involved with people her own age since most of her day is spent talking to teenaged kids who need guidance, and any other time she has is spent fixing up her house so that her younger sister has a decent bedroom for when she moves back to Capeside. So she doesn’t really have time to go out and find friends her own age. Plus she’s quite content with her books or her music, she finds that the drama that comes with having friends sometimes, is enough to steer her away heading out to a club or the park. Samantha is also a little shy when it comes to first meeting people, she doesn’t really know how to strike up a conversation with people that she doesn’t know.
-- AMUSING ; If you are one of the few that takes the time to get past the awkward quietness and timid nature behind Samantha, then you will see a side of her that few ever see. She can actually be quite funny sometimes, it isn’t really stand-up comedy or anything that will split your sides, it’s more the type of funny comments that make you snicker or giggle. It isn’t done to be particularly funny, either. More or less it’s just regular things that she would say without realising that they can be taken in a particular way to make them hilarious. Not that it doesn’t make it any less amusing. If you let her be herself with you then she becomes almost a different person sometimes, she’ll take dares from her closest friends and as long as they aren’t too crazy she will do them. Sam can almost be a little spontaneous, although it just takes someone special that makes her feel really comfortable and safe to bring out the wild side in her.
--FOCUSED ; This is a bit of her downfall here, she tends to drive people away from her relationship wise. When it comes to her and her career, she can be extremely set on accomplishing her work goals, this makes her personal life take place second in her life. Hence, if you want to be her friend, you better be ready to try hard to keep her. She is also very focused in her relationships too, she isn’t the type to have one night stands or flings with people she has no intention on having a real relationship with. If she could find her soul mate at the age she is now, she would definitely take that above dating around and trying to find someone to have fun with for some time. She has a very specific mindset for her future, she wants to eventually get married, have kids and live in a little two story house with a white picket fence. She’s very stereotypical. She wants to make cookies for her children, take them to parks and everything. So yeah, she’s focused on both of her lives to the extent of she has them almost to the detail.
-- LOVES: Fresh-baked cookies, literature of any type, the exclusive playlist of her iPod, her younger sister, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Couldn’t help it... teehee.), horror/thriller movies, helping people out with their problems, staying up late writing or doing work, dogs (She has three.), and the faint smell of dried flowers. -- HATES: Driving places (She doesn’t trust her car) that she can get to on foot, people that have disposition problems, those cheesy romantic movies that make you feel horrible about your own love life, sleeping in later then she would have liked, people who drink obsessively, horrible grammar, people who are bigoted, teen pop sensations, getting pranked, and the feeling you get when you are up too high.
-- HISTORY !
Childhood was pretty good for Samantha Alice Richards-Defoy, I can’t say that it was the happiest time growing up that one has ever received, but on the scale of normalcy she at least balanced with average. She was roughly the middle child in a family with six kids, with two older brothers above her and two younger brothers and a younger sister below her. Out of five siblings you would think that she would have gotten along with more than just two of them, but due to varying differences in opinions she practically grew up with her oldest brother and youngest sister being the only siblings she could stand.
The biggest problem in their opinions was how they felt about their Father. William Defoy was not the kindest man to have fathered children and often treated his children with an indifference to how he treated the employees at his factory. He treated them and his wife rudely, never allowing them any freedoms from their chores and constantly acting out of anger whenever one of them crossed him. Shortly after his youngest child was born William lost all of the business he was receiving and quickly went bankrupt, owing the bank large sums of money, rather than lose every penny he earned, he took off for another country, leaving his wife and children behind. While Samantha, her eldest brother and youngest sister felt nothing but hatred towards the man that had left their family in an emotional ruin, their other three siblings and their mother continued to idolize the man, claiming that he would be back for them.
He never came back, breaking Madison Dahlia Richards heart to the extent where she could barely get out of bed to take care of her young children, thus Samantha and her older brother were left to parent their siblings for a year or so by themselves. Steven had been thirteen when their Father left them so when his Mother broke down, he took to caring for the family himself. He worked hard to keep his family together and cared for, money was still tight though, and they could barely afford any luxuries, but they managed for the two years it took for news to travel to their Father’s sister about their problems.
Margaret “Maggie” Defoy was a very kind woman, much unlike her brother, so much so that when she heard that her nieces and nephews were having so much trouble after their Father had left them, she put it upon herself to take care of them. She came from her hometown of Capeside to live with them in San Francisco for nine years until Steven was old enough to finish college and get a job that paid enough to actually take care of his siblings. From that point on, she was up there for at least a few months at a time for the younger ones who still weren’t grown up yet. She was almost the mother that they had before their Father left, she took care of the youngest three children like they were biologically her own and treated Samantha as if she was equally in charge of the family. Almost all of the kids loved her to bits, and in turn she loved them as much as she would her own children, which was like it wasn’t too surprising that when she decided to go off to Europe for a few years when the kids were much older and grown up, she left each of them something. Especially Samantha.
For some reason, Aunt Maggie seemed to just click with Samantha better than her own mother had ever done, the two of them got along very well with each other and constantly spent time together. Samantha particularly liked in between the ages of eleven and twenty-three, she had a great time having her aunt as a guardian, even if three of her siblings took an opposite effect and acted out. That was probably a reason why Maggie bonded with Samantha, the older woman taught her everything that she knew and was even very supportive of when Sam decided to come out to her family, which was a fresh change from how her mother reacted, practically casting her out of what little she reacted with the family.
That was why when Maggie went to Europe, she left her entire property over to Samantha, included her house, her old car and quite a bit of money to keep her on her feet. That was how Sam ended up at Capeside, she knew from her Aunts gushing that it was a great place to live and very open to different lifestyles. So she moved all of her stuff up there, along with the three dogs that she had raised from pups. It was hardest leaving her younger sister behind, but knew that she would bring her up there as soon as she could. She’s only been at Capeside for about a month but so far she enjoys it, she just wishes that she knew some more people and that she had her three favourite people up with her.
-- SAMPLE !
Steven wanted to plug his little sister’s ears or cover her eyes, if he had enough hands he probably would have done both to spare her from the intense obscenities that their Father was screaming at their Mother. He hated his Dad at that moment even more than he had ever disliked the man, he had no right to treat his wife that way, especially not in front of his children. The worst thing about it all was the way that his Mother always just took it without as much as a word back at him, even worse was how she was so upset at him leaving now, she looked just as devastated as his three brothers did as he walked out the door without as much as a goodbye or an “I’ll miss you.” He only screamed at them about how it was their fault that he had to go, if he hadn’t spent so much money on them, they wouldn’t be poor.
Holding Katherine in his arms as his Mother tried to run after their Father, screaming and begging for just another week and she would fix it, Steven left his brothers at the front door, taking Samantha upstairs to her own bedroom, the protective side in him didn’t want either one of his little sisters to see that or get upset. So he followed his natural instinct, to take them away. Sam followed him obediently, tears in her eyes threatening to spill down. “Hey...” He said softly when he closed the door to her room.
Putting his hand on her shoulder, and shifting the baby to his other side, he looked at his little sisters face. “Crying makes your perfect face all ugly and contorted, pipsqueak.” He tried to smile as he rubbed her tears away with the sleeve of one of her shirts, it wasn’t very successful since you could hear through her window, their Dads continued screaming and her Mother begging for forgiveness. He hated that either of them could hear that. Crossing the room to close the curtains, Steven set little Katie on the bed, before sitting down beside her and patting the spot on the other spot beside him. “Come here.” He said softly, leaning over to grab her hand gently and pull her over to him, almost immediately he knew what was going to happen. Holding her to his chest as she started to sob into his shirt, he rubbed her back softly and comfortingly, his sister needed him right now. Unlike his Father, he was there for her.
“He isn’t worth it, okay.” Steven reminded her, tightening the hug that they were in. Sammy was only nine years old, she really shouldn’t have to deal with any of this, and he felt bad. He was her big brother, he was supposed to be able to protect her, and he couldn’t even prevent her from crying about their lousy Dad. “I’ll take care of you, okay Samantha. I’m your older brother... Trust me.” As he heard the door downstairs slam and the car start up, he knew that his Mother had lost the battle to keep him there, his Father was leaving. On one side Steven was happy that he wouldn’t be causing a problem anymore, on the other side he didn’t know if he was good enough to keep the family together. He was only thirteen himself, but he had to try for his sisters. He loved them the most.
“I’ll take care of you, Mom, Katie, Justin, Kevin and Jack. I just need enough time to figure out how to exactly do it, but don’t worry. I will take care of you, I swear.”

-- ACCEPTED ! Just a note. For future reference, less history about everyone in her family and more about her. I understand the parts that were important, but she was barely in her own history.
