She let Marco sleep in that Saturday morning and got up to fix Claire some breakfast before changing her into a swimsuit and sundress, grabbing a pair of beach towels and Claire’s favorite Barbie dolls and heading out to meet Sophie. It was good for the girls to get some sunlight and play in the sand and it sure as hell was good for Kathryn. She didn’t think she’s just laid beneath the sunrays in front of the sea in ages. While the water would probably be too cold to get close to, there was still enough room for the girls to play and plenty of time for the moms to catch up before returning home.
The week had gone by with barely any morning sickness and Kat was feeling better than she had all month. She decided to bury the uneasy feeling she had a product of barely spending any time with Marco in weeks, try to relax that morning and offer to do something together that afternoon. The three of them. Maybe go shopping for the new baby or watch movies.
Kat removed her flip flops before stepping in the sand and let Claire run off ahead with a promise to stay in sight. They found a nice spot on which to settle their stuff and sit at just the right distance from the water where they could also be spotted by Sophie. Claire would get close to it and run back off with a yelp when the tide covered the shore. And repeat. Kat giggled from her sitting place. Opening up a bag of chips and taking a drink of water, she watched Claire while waiting for the other two girls to join them.

While Sophie loved all the mother’s in her mother’s group, sometimes it was nice just to spend time with Kat. Simply because they both had husbands, and sometimes Sophie found it nice to talk to someone that understood what it was like. Besides, it seemed they could both sympathize with the idea of a distant husband. While Sophie knew that Nate was always so busy because of work, it didn’t make the situation any easier. Like today for instance, Nate was putting in over-time instead of spending the day with his family, so Sophie had jumped at the chance to spend some time with Kathryn and Claire. When she had told Holly of the plans, the little girl had been delighted. Holly was younger than Claire, and yet she still seemed to try and boss the older girl around. A fact that bemused Sophie. She supposed she just had to face facts that her daughter liked to try and take charge.
After dressing herself and Holly in clothes appropriate for the beach, the woman gathered together some snacks- fresh fruit, cracker and some cupcakes. As well as bottles of juice and water. Sophie always over-prepared for things, but that was just how she was. Sophie couldn’t be sure if she had always been that way, but she definitely been that way since the birth of her daughter. With everything ready, Sophie packed herself, her daughter, and their things in the car. After about a twenty minute drive, the woman pulled into the parking lot of the beach. It took her a few minutes to get everything from the car, and an anxious Holly hopped from foot to foot as she waited. Once Sophie nodded the go ahead, the little girl let out a squeal of delight and run full-pelt towards the sand. Sophie moved a little slower. She spotted Kat easily and smiled as she moved towards the other woman. “Morning!” She greeted brightly, as she set down her things and joined the woman in the sand. “How are you doing today? Any morning sickness?”

“Claire, don’t pick that up!”
The five-year-old had been briefly and strangely interested in the carcass of a seagull, immediately prompting Kathryn to try to jump up from her spot on the ground and run at her before the little hands got anywhere near the dead bird. The girl had been about to ceremoniously do the opposite of what she’d been told which would have left her mother with no option other than regretfully prying it away from the girl herself. Luckily, however, a second tiny figure got to Claire before Kat was even done getting up. Holly, who Kat recognized immediately, served as the perfect distraction and drew Claire’s attention away from the carcass as she turned to her friend with glee. Kat put a hand on her chest, breathed and sat back down, looking around at Sophie, Holly’s mother, as she joined her.
“Hey,” Kat greeted, “Nothing at all. In fact, I’m having a love affair with these cheetos you wouldn’t believe. I’m willing to share, though; not a jealous gal,” she joked with a small smile. Glancing over at the girls just to make sure Claire had really forgotten all about that bird, Kat settled back down comfortably to rest on her shoulders. She didn’t mind the sun on her face; it was though she could feel the serotonin running through her body just being there.
“How are you?” she asked Sophie, “How’re things at home?”
It was nice talking to a married friend. And Kat didn’t exactly like the other moms from Claire’s group at pre-school. Sure, they got along amicably, but Kat didn’t wasn’t really close enough to any of them to just hang out at the beach and express concern related to her home life like she did with the these moms, out of which only Sophie was married.
