“Wow, that was fast. I know that when I go upstairs and check under your bed I’m not gonna find all your toys crammed in there.”
At this, Claire merely stood still for a beat or two, slightly narrowed her eyes at Kathryn and with a sigh turned right on her heel and went back up to her bedroom to rearrange what she had surely thought would comply with the command to clean her room earlier given to her by her mother that day. Kat didn’t even bother rolling her eyes or fight cracking a smile as she continued applying eye make up in front of the mirror. Really, was it the hair? Why was it that even her own daughter thought Kat to be so easily fooled? She knew Claire deeply disliked cleaning up a mess and that, if were up to the girl, she would live in a sea of stuffed animals and Barbie dolls around her bed even if it meant stepping on them on the way out. Claire, for some reason, thought Kat wouldn’t notice it this time if she just pushed everything under the bed and hurried downstairs to be taken to that birthday party Kathryn had told her she wouldn’t drive her to until her room as tidied up. It was mainly Kathryn’s job to ser and enforce rules and to forbid things and apply punishments. Marco was too weak when it came to Claire while Kat was more immune to her big blue eyes and therefore usually the bad cop.
“I’m in no hurry!” Kat called out. Except she was a little bit. There were a few errands to run before class that day. She had had just enough time to pick Claire up from school and bring her home to change before the party, from where Marco would have to pick her up later since Kathryn had a full afternoon.
The girl was eventually back, getting her coat on to pressure Kat and looking annoyed, which indicated that room was perfectly in order. Kathryn hid a smile and was prompt to get to the door herself in order to avoid Claire throwing a fit for being late and missing the magician. She dropped her off with one of the moms who would be at the party and a hushed warning not to cuss and Kathryn was on her way. The following hour or so went by productively and finally Kat was ready to hurry to All That Jazz to be in time to greet her ballroom students, a group of adults who either needed lessons for an upcoming wedding or were simply seeking a hobby. She was sure she would be running into some of them at the Sock Hop Dance Competitions, which Kat had recommended for practice. This year she was going herself, having already signed up Marco and herself. Last year they hadn’t been able to find a babysitter and so they had missed it. But Kat always enjoyed the Sock Hop. It was fun and it was for a good cause and it involved getting out of the house for several hours.
Once she had crossed every item of her to-do list, such as paying the bills and buying milk for that evening, the last stop before work was the gas station. Kat got out of the car and purchased a bottle of water at the convenient store after filling the tank. Glancing at her cellular phone, she noticed with a bit of urgency that it was time to get to work. She turned on the engine and attempted to leave the gas station in two swift movements: reverse, go. Except the gracefulness of her exit was thwarted by the sudden arrival of a second car. Kathryn crashed so directly against it that she jumped in her seat due to not wearing her seatbelt. The sound it had made had scared her more than the actual impact but still she was shaking slightly as she looked at the other driver through her rearview mirror before quickly getting out.
