But why? Why, after all that time, had he finally come back? There were three reasons. They were called Nataliya, Hazel and Rowan. Of course, at that point he had no idea what his daughters were called. He had no idea that they were even daughters. Actually, Tanner only thought that there were two reasons he had come back to Capeside. The fact that his ex-girlfriend had given birth to twins was still unknown to him. He hoped dearly that she had kept his child. The child would hold so many memories of him and Tanner wondered if Nataliya was strong enough for that. Of course she was. She had always been a strong woman. She probably hated him. After all, he had left her in perhaps her greatest time of need. He did not even deserve to talk to her or to see his child. He was no father. Walking along the streets that were so familiar to him, and yet so different, Tanner wondered where he would find Nataliya. At that moment, he was simply wandering aimlessly, trying to find something that would lead him to the one he was seeking so desperately. He needed to find her, to apologize for being such a complete and utter bastard. Because that was exactly what he had been to her. He had completely betrayed her trust in him and he accepted that fact. But he was willing to do whatever it would take to regain that trust, and also to gain the trust of his child. He still loved Nataliya and that was all that mattered to him. That was all that would ever matter to him. He just needed her to see that. The bakery. That had always been her dream hadn’t it? Just as he saw the sign for the newly opened bakery he realised that he had known where to go all along. She was an amazing baker, she always had been. Over the years that they were together Tanner had tasted numerous different concoctions of hers. They were all equally amazing and he loved each and every one of them. He missed the sweet taste of her cookies on his tongue, the way she could make anything taste and look beautiful. Her cupcakes were like works of art, each one crafted and decorated to perfection. He had often sat in the kitchen and sketched her as she worked, finding the way her hands moved to be magnificent. He had sketched many of her lavish cakes and deserts. He found the presentation of them to be inspirational almost. It was stupid, he thought, but he did not care. Tanner walked up to the bakery and swung the door open. As he did so, a little bell jingled above his head, probably alerting whoever was working there that they had a customer. There was no one at the counter at that moment and Tanner assumed that they would turn up immediately. As he walked into the store he wondered if he had been wrong. Maybe this was not Nataliya’s bakery. Maybe he had been all wrong. Perhaps she was not even in Capeside anymore. Maybe she had moved away. If she had he would not have heard, they hadn’t spoken for three years after all. But this was his best lead to finding her. He had to give it a chance. As he spied the glass case where all of the cakes and cupcakes were held he exhaled softly. It was like he was hypnotized suddenly; everything else in the world was gone. His mind brought him back to the kitchen all those years ago. He was sitting at the counter, pencil in hand. Running around the kitchen was the perfect form of Nataliya. Her long, brown hair was tied up, probably to stop it from getting into the food. She was working hard, stressing out about something. She was speaking to him but Tanner’s memory had let go of the words she had been saying. He looked down at the paper in front of him; he had sketched, perfectly, her figure bent over the bench, adding the last few details to the cupcakes. They were beautiful cupcakes. As he came back to reality looking at the cabinet, through the glass he could see the exact same cupcakes, still perfectly done. This was Nataliya’s bakery. He had finally found her. “It had always been your dream…” Tanner murmured to himself softly as he waited for someone to come out of the back of the store. |
