-- ARTHUR GRANT STEVENS !
-- NAME: Arthur Grant Stevens -- NICKNAMES: Art, Artie -- AGE & BIRTHDAY: twenty-six, February fifteenth -- BIRTH PLACE: Capeside -- ORIENTATION: Heterosexual -- OCCUPATION: Computer Programmer -- PLAYED BY: John Francis Daley
-- PERSONALITY !
-- HARD-WORKING: His mother drilled it into his head that he needed to work hard in order to get ahead. Arthur has taken that to heart and now he puts his whole heart into everything he does. He’s very determined to climb to the top and will fight to do so no matter what it takes. Although he’s prone to distractions (as demonstrated in the next point) he has the mindset that he won’t get anywhere if he doesn’t work at it. He doesn’t like to take favors. If his mom could pull herself out of a rut and make a stable life for herself then he figured he could, too. Of course, he doesn’t take into consideration any aid she received from his grandparents, or the times her friends had to chip in to cover her portion of the rent. He prefers to refuse any offers to help. Sometimes he allows his determination to cloud his judgment and he has the tendency to make bad decisions as a result. He’s liable to say the wrong thing or ignore people/responsibilities without really considering the consequences. He has a very one-track mind. If he’s working toward something regarding his career, his personal relationships take a back seat. If he’s working on a relationship, he tends to ignore his work. Arthur has a difficult time finding a balance.
-- IMPRESSIONABLE: This stems from the fact that he’s a passionate person, as well as his one-track mind. He has trouble correctly sorting out his priorities. It’s easy for people to come in and pressure him into doing something, since he’s such a push over. In college, when he was concerned with keeping friends, it was easy for them to rope him into partying and drinking. His ex-girlfriend found it easy to push him around because he so desperately wanted to keep their relationship going. A lot of his thoughts and beliefs change depending on who he’s around. If he has a friend who’s passionate about something, it wouldn’t take much to get him passionate about it as well. Of course, these prove to be distractions. He’ll often neglect what he should be doing in favor of this new-found obsession.
-- KIND: While he may be a workaholic and he might value his intelligence more than his social skills, he truly is a nice guy. He likes it when people open up to him. He likes to listen and while his advice might not be very good, he still tries to give it nevertheless. He likes to crack (lame) jokes and enjoy life just as much as the next person. He just has a different way of expressing it. He has a soft spot in his heart for the people he loves and he’d put himself out on the line for them if he needed to. The people he loves are the constants in his life, and only get there after proving they can stick with him through his bouts of poor judgment and ridiculous priorities.
-- LOVES: computers, books, kids, watching television, going for walks, night time, his mother, his grandparents, green tea, his job. -- HATES: sushi, his father, kindles, sports, distractions, his ex-girlfriend, fire, computer viruses, dancing, failing.
-- HISTORY ! Upon delivering the news that she was with-child, Anita Stevens was abandoned by her fiance, Grant, and left to fend for herself. A Junior in college, she was forced to drop out of school and pick up odd jobs to keep up her half of the rent after she moved into an apartment with two close friends. Always a hard worker, she had managed to stabilize herself by the time Andrew was born. Aside from making the child's middle name 'Grant', Anita had completely separated herself from her ex. It took them a few years, but eventually the mother-son pair found their rhythm. She got a job that could pay the bills and found an apartment on her own, leaving Arthur with her parents during the day. It wasn't glamorous, but it worked.
Artie grew up being taught that hard work was the key to success and he carried that through with everything that he did. While his social skills were never quite refined, he did quite well in school, working as hard as possible to get decent grades. It paid off; while he didn't have a large group of friends, he graduated at the top of his class and went on to the University of Boston. While happy, he still left unfulfilled- when he moved into the dorms for the first time, he'd never been kissed, never had a girlfriend. In fact, he'd spent his High School career pining after one of his peers. Not that he ever told her. Or... Really spoke to her, for that matter.
The college life was a big slap in the face. The friends he acquired introduced him to parties. While he resisted at first, the pressure to try alcohol became too great and he landed in a world of bad influences. One influence in particular took him by storm- Gina was his first (and only long-term) girlfriend. With how often he went out with her, he started to neglect his school work. By the end of his Freshman year, he was dangerously close to failing out. His mother pulled him out of it, reminding him that he had an opportunity and he was letting it go to waste. When Sophomore year rolled around, Arthur was fully prepared to focus on his schoolwork once more. Gina remained with him and, at first, seemed respectful of his wishes to keep sober and focus on his schoolwork. But as the months wore on, she began to walk all over him. While it wasn't as severe as before, it wasn't long before she threw him off track again.
He managed to get his degree, however, and when he moved back to Capeside, the two of them broke up for good. With his head clear, Arthur scored himself a job as a computer programmer and has been working up the success ladder ever since. He's quite content with his life.
