-- MAKAYLA ANN SPENCER !
-- NAME: Makayla Ann Spencer -- NICKNAMES: Mickey, first and foremost, and Kayla by a few others. -- AGE & BIRTHDAY: 28 – May 5th. -- BIRTH PLACE: Perth, Australia -- ORIENTATION: Straight -- OCCUPATION & SCHOOL GRADE: Physical Therapist -- PLAYED BY: Edita Vilkeviciute
-- PERSONALITY !
-- LOYAL: Makayla has never had a problem talking to people. To call her a social butterfly would be an understatement. It’s always been one of her goals in life to try and make everyone she meets a little happier. Whether it’s because she simply smiled at a stranger or offered a shoulder to cry on to a friend. Thing is, it doesn’t take much to win her loyalties. Making ‘friends’ is her specialty, and she has a tendency to trust her friend—her idea of trust, at least. She’s willing to do a lot for her friends and, while it may on occasion lead her to be taken advantage of, she really doesn’t mind. Her explanation is simply to say that you can’t be taken advantage of unless you let someone do it—she’s not just getting walked all over, she’s offering help and, if she can help that person by being there for them however they need it, she will. That doesn’t necessarily mean she’s going to share all of her life problems with the person, but she’s certainly willing to drive you to the airport at three AM because you don’t have anyone else or pick you up from a party because you dropped your keys down the sewer grate. That, or, you know… just buy a cup of coffee and chat for awhile.
-- DEPENDANT: While she tries to remain the happy person, always with a smile and an encouraging word, Makayla really benefits from having someone that’s close to her that she can be honest with. Someone who she is slightly more comfortable being herself around—even though it’s still hard for her to admit when she’s struggling or having problems, as her mind always tells her she’s being selfish for it. But, without having people around her, she feels completely lost. Even though she doesn’t share her whole life with people, it doesn’t mean she doesn’t benefit from having so many friends around her. She depends a lot upon her friends… in a way, she depends on the fact that they’re going to depend on her. It helps her to feel needed and, ultimately, cared for.
-- HELPFUL: Makayla likes to fix things. She likes to make sure that everyone has a smile on their face; they all feel like someone cares about them; and that the world’s problems are actually getting better. Maybe not so much the latter of the three, but for general purposes, yes. She’s very goal oriented in the sense that she has her projects. Perhaps not to be thought of in such a cold and calculating manner as that, but she has a tendency to seek out people that need help, whether it be physical, emotional, or mental, and try to do her best to help fix the problem, whatever it may be. At the same time, she loves to learn about the people she’s helping. Part of this feeds into the ability others have to take advantage of her, because she already makes it a point to try and do things for them, but she’s also not stupid. She sees the way the world works and, as a whole, doesn’t like it. Even if it just means helping to change one life, Makayla is committed to that.
-- LOVES: Her pets (a german shepherd puppy named Cadabra and a six year old Tabby cat named Abra), her new apartment, the beach, coffee first thing in the morning, her job, Australia, vacations, chick flicks, sunrises, running, cooking (especially for others), having guests, good wine, rugby, and scarves. -- HATES: Cold weather, spending Saturdays inside, watching too much TV, uptight people, sleeping in, sharing her emotions, her cat (it’s a love-hate thing.), superstitions, first dates, Norfolk, seeing people injured, overly stressful situations, that phrase ‘google it’, cold showers, and silence.
-- HISTORY !
Born approximately twenty-eight years ago in Perth, Australia, was Makayla Spencer. Her mother, an American artist, had married an Australian man that she met while touring the country. After their marriage, it was quite obvious that they were helplessly and madly in love with one another and decided to grow their family. This was where Makayla entered the picture. The three were just about as happy as could be… you know, after the first year of constant crying, colic, loads of dirty diapers, and more formula than they knew what to do with. But, despite it all, they carried on as a wonderful family and seemed relatively content with their lives. Her dad ran a small company and her mom continued to pursue her art, both of them encouraging her to do what she liked. It wasn’t until she was twelve years old, right after the family moved to the states and back to Mrs. Spencer’s hometown of Norfolk, Virginia, that Makayla started to get an idea of what it was that she liked.
Sailors. Or, not necessarily the sailors themselves, but the military. She wasn’t looking to join the military—not in the slightest, but she thought that what those men did was truly amazing. That they would be willing to risk their lives and defend a country was astounding to the twelve year old. Finding out how things worked was always interesting to her, and as she started to get older she found herself drawn towards the human body and it’s many intricacies. By the time she was sixteen, she had decided that she wanted to work with people in some sort of a medical field, and by eighteen she had narrowed it down to physical therapy. While she may not have been the best decision maker in the world, she wasn’t one for dancing around a subject for an ungodly amount of time. She didn’t change majors once through college, she stuck with her career choice, majoring in physical therapy and psychology, and even managed to get good grades. Makayla knew what she wanted and she knew how to get it. The only disconnect came from learning in the classroom to experiencing the real world.
At twenty-four, she started to work in a military hospital in Norfolk, dealing with recently injured soldiers that had returned home. While surgery and things of that nature weren’t her job, she frequently dealt with men that were struggling with serious injuries that would likely change their lives forever. There were plenty of mixed emotions through her three years working there, and she wouldn’t have changed it for the world. Ask her what she learned while working there and she’ll make you a list and go into detail. It wasn’t just the soldiers that taught her, though. About a year after starting her job, her mother was diagnosed as having advanced breast cancer—the disease having gone unnoticed for quite awhile. It took seven months from the time it was found for it to take her mother’s life. While it was certainly a heartbreaking experience, Makayla found that most of the strength she gained to get through it was drawn from the men she helped at the hospital.
By twenty-eight, however, she was beginning to feel that her job was becoming too much of an emotional—and physical—drain on her and she needed to pursue a job elsewhere. An opening for a physical therapist at a hospital in Capeside is what brought her North to Massachusetts and, now that she’s out of Virginia, she’s not sure that she’ll ever go back.
