-- BRIDGET PENELOPE HASTINGS !
-- NAME: bridget penelope hastings -- NICKNAMES: bridge, bee, bumble bee, ginger snap, etc -- AGE & BIRTHDAY: twenty five, february 23rd -- BIRTH PLACE: capeside -- ORIENTATION: heterosexual -- OCCUPATION & SCHOOL GRADE: high school biology teacher -- PLAYED BY: Karen gillian
-- PERSONALITY !
-- GOOFBALL: Bridget was never the normal type, she believes that all things should be more fun and if she can help someone achieve that it’s all the better to her. She’s a total goofball and is always up for looking like a dork to get someone to laugh. Bridget’s goal in life is to leave the world happier than she found it and if she can make just one person’s life brighter she’s done her job as far as she’s concerned. Throughout most of her life she’s tried not to take herself to seriously, she’d rather make light of things than be miserably mulling over everything wrong about the day. She talks to herself constantly, dances without music, randomly begins to skip about, makes funny faces, she’s completely clumsy and just generally find some reason to laugh at herself. Being the only Red head in the family and her mother’s comments about her clownish red hair Bridget always felt it was kind of her place to be the clown of her family. Sometimes her goofball attitude can make people think that she’s can’t take things seriously. -- MATERNAL: Being the second oldest of five children Bridget always felt protective over her siblings younger and older. She’s not totally obvious about it, but every one of her siblings know they can come to her if they have a problem or need a shoulder to cry on. She has a comforting way about her and a talent for making people feel like they’re the only one that matters in the world for as long as they’re with her. Unlike their parents Bridget practices unconditional love, much in contrast to her parent’s very conditional love. She doesn’t care what you’ve done, how you’ve screwed up or if it was your fault, she’s there for you though anything. She always felt that her parents were quite cold and that she needed to show her sisters and brother what parents should be like and so she took on a very motherly role even though they are all so close in age. Her maternal side isn’t just reserved for her family though, it comes out in many different situations.
-- SELF-CONSCIOUS: In no way does she think she’s the most beautiful girl in the world, her mother constantly putting her looks down made her well aware of that. The funny this is though very little of her insecurity comes from her looks. Instead a lot of it stems from her fear of never being enough for someone. She was always a very intelligent young girl with a wonderful imagination, but her constant good grades never seemed to impress her parents instead it was just what they expected of her. She never got on with her parents well, but their constant disapproval and what they called a healthy dosage of “tough love” caused poor Bridget to become rather self-conscious about her own self-worth, the one thing she was criticized for the most was her goofy personality which causes her to often feel she’s too weird for anyone to be able to handle when in actuality she’s just a pleasant person to be around.
-- INDEPENDENT:One of Bridget’s largest strengths is also one of her worst flaws. She’s a strong independent woman and can do pretty much anything she needs to on her own, though she also has an incredibly hard time admitting when she does need help. Bridget has been independent her entire life, she never needed anyone to save her and she was more than happy to be on her own. Course that does not mean she didn’t desperately love her siblings. However always wanted to do things on her own, namely without her parents help. Bridget never wanted her parents to hold her bike up for her and she learned to tie her own shoes as soon as she could. She wanted to be her own person, not what people told her to be and she worked very hard to develop her own thought process, she’s not impressionable. As I said she loves her siblings and would never say no to spending time with them (unless she felt they were taking pity on her or trying to trick her into letting them help her).
-- LOVES: writing, science, experiments, excitement, making up fantasy worlds, cookie dough, ice cream, coffee, glazed donuts, dahlias, her siblings, theater, tv, movies, music, the morgue, etc. -- HATES: rudeness, being bogged down, obnoxious noisy people, when people treat her like she can’t take care of herself, close minded people, her parents, mushrooms, sweating, bad acting, running into people from high school, people acting like she’s off her rocker, feeling powerless.
-- HISTORY !
On February twenty third Bridget Penelope Hastings was born to two very religious zealots of parents. Though Bridget grew up in a very religious and strict family she never was quite sold on the idea that her parent’s beliefs were the right beliefs. As far as she was concerned their faith was all about forgiveness and unconditional love, but they didn’t seem to see it that way, they seemed to have nothing but conditions and they didn’t seem much for forgiveness. They were strict and didn’t want their children to have a mind of their own. Bridge was a bit of a rebel in her own way as a kid, she disobeyed them if she saw fit and didn’t care if they punished her. She found it much harder than her older brother to play the perfect child, so she didn’t. She dated boys behind their back and bought make up before they’d ever allow her to, she’d wear two different outfits a day, the one her friends saw and the one her parents saw. However, Bridget was never very good at being sneaky and they soon found out and stuck her in a strict all girls Catholic private school so that she couldn’t get into trouble, or even worse get pregnant.
It only made things worse however and she began to date older boys from the school a couple blocks away. She didn’t get pregnant though, she didn’t even lose her virginity until she was twenty one. In high school though she was not popular and adopted the goth persona which through her parents into a craze lecturing her about devil worship, she tried to explain to them that being goth and devil worship weren’t always synonymous, but they wouldn’t listen instead they took the door off her room, so that she’d have no privacy. Writing was her escape in that time, she couldn’t stop and she always made sure it was her little secret. The day she graduated High school was the best day of her life, she had so many scholarships to choose from that she pretty much got to take her pick to any school in the country and much to her parents dismay she picked a school in New York City. Bridget was suddenly out of her strict bubble and got to meet people of all religions and morals, it was a very exciting time for her. What was the most exciting thing was she got to meet religious people of all faiths including her parent’s that weren’t zealots, they were perfectly lovely accepting people.
She met her first serious boyfriend in college and the two dated for three years, unfortunately he wasn’t a good guy and turned out to be quite abusive toward Bridget, it started out with him “just” putting her down and being quite jealous of her best friend who happened to be a guy, then it quickly escalated to full out verbal and physical abuse. Her friends tried to help her especially her best friend, but she refused to accept their help and put up with it for the three years that they were dating, she’d love to say she found the strength and independence to leave him, but the truth is he ended up shooting and killing himself one night. Bridget was ashamed of the way she’d been so dependent and promised that she’d never be that way again, she was disgusted by her behavior and still to this day won’t admit that Hank killing himself hurt her and took her quite some time to get over. With the remanding year of her college life she finished up her degree in Education, she wanted to teach Biology.
Bridget then went on to her horror to get a job back in her home town, though she didn’t want to ever return to Capeside, they were in desperate need of a Science teacher and she was in desperate need of a job. For about Four years she’s been teaching at Capeside high and often volunteers at the morgue, she’s fairly content with her life right now. Her time at Capeside high has allowed her to finish a very humorous novel she started in high school called “Living with Zealots: A Survival Guide”, she published it under a pen name and to this day, no one in her family knows that she’s been published, she didn’t tell anyone in fear that they might become rather insulted by it. Never the less she takes pride in it, but doesn’t plan on writing another book, she writes for herself as a hobby still. Maybe someday in the future she’ll decide something is just too good to keep to herself, but for now she’s perfectly happy teaching a subject she has loads of passion and enthusiasm for – Science.
