-- INDEPENDENT: No one tells Katarina Hastings what to do. She does nothing unless she is personally fond of the idea herself. This stemmed from childhood when she was always forced to do everything her parents - strict Catholics - told her to do. Sure, she obeyed them then, and most of the time she obeys them now (though not quite so much because she is twenty three years old and she does live in a different state than them), but she rarely listens to anybody else, who isn't related to her. More stubborn than a mule, people have often described her as. But she much prefers going her own way and doing her own thing than anyone else's, though she does it in a rather abrupt and forceful manner the majority of the time.

-- INTENSE: Kat is the sort of woman who gets so into things that she can literally be extremely terrifying if you get in her way. She doesn't mean to most of the time, but she can really bite your head off if she is in one of her slightly depredating moods. A perfectionist, she can't stand anything being out of place, though I wouldn't particularly call her OCD, she does seem so at times. And when people put her things out of place, she can get a little .. wiggy. She almost always apologizes afterwards, but she does seem to scare the crap out of a lot of people. She has a pretty short temper, and a tendency to be extremely sarcastic and sassy even in a good mood. To be honest, she is in all aspects of the phrase, a hot mess. 

-- BENEVOLENT: She may be slightly crazy and way too stubborn for her own good, and maybe her temper is just a tad bit short, but Kat is honestly a very loving person at the end of the day. Due to certain unforeseeable circumstances, she has decided that she needed to be less of a freak show and more of.. well, a woman. She is trying to keep her temper and stop freaking out at every little thing. Charitable has become a word that describes her to a T, believe it or not, she certainly can hardly believe it herself. She has always had a loving heart, if you could get past her rather rough temperament.

-- LOVES: Her family, writing, investigating, Google, freedom, independence, messes, anything out of place, public speaking, excessive use of capitals and exclamation points.
-- HATES: The Bing search engine, being told what to do, losing her temper, being called crazy, people speaking for her, nightmares about the accident, forgetting things, obnoxious children, really stupid people, her headaches.

Katarina Juliet Hastings was born twenty three years ago, the third child of the Hastings family. Christina and Jonathon were extremely strict Catholic parents. Kat was always a very headstrong girl, but she almost always obeyed what her parents told her to do. This included not dating anyone they didn't approve of, which wasn't really an issue most of the time for her because dating was not high on her list of things to do. She was always far too busy for boys. Though apparently, it seemed to them like she was just playing hard to get. When in all honesty, she was just quite literally, hard to get.
 
Kat didn't date at all in high school, even though there was a boy who did chase her through the years: a boy by the name of Jared. Even after high school, they managed to get into the same college, to her disappointment. They certainly had an interesting relationship, she seemed to hate him, but at the same time, she didn't completely push him away like she did to everyone else she 'hated'. In some ways, he was her best friend, because other than her brother and sisters, she didn't really have many friends, and in other ways, he was her biggest annoyance, he never let up, and that drove her crazy.

He was the only guy who ever really tried to get to know her, and that was always extremely weird for her, she never understood why. Why was always Katarina's main question to everything. If she didn't understand why, she didn't understand it at all.
 
When she was nineteen, Kat found out that her brother Tanner had gotten his girlfriend, Nataliya, pregnant. This came as an absolute shock to Kat, what with their parents' strict upbringing, but their parents never actually found out. Katarina didn't find out about this until later, and when she did learn of this, and then of Tanner's just up and leaving his girlfriend and unborn baby, or babies, she didn't even know what to think anymore. She understood that he needed to get away, sure, but the fact that he just left her alone was always not cool in Katarina's mind. Not that she would hold a grudge against her only brother, however.

Kat got a degree in journalism in college, and promptly moved back to Capeside, becoming the community journalist. Jared had already moved back a year before, and they soon fell back into their strange bickering on her end, flirting on his, "friendship", if you could really call it that. 

But no one could ever expect what came next: a car crash. Jared was driving, and Kat was in the passenger seat, and he took her eyes off the road for a split second and rammed into another car, one that had been running a red light while Jared turned. Katarina got out with a few scars and bruises, miraculously almost entirely unharmed, but things weren't quite so lucky for Jared. He was in a coma for four days, the entirety of the time Kat stayed at the hospital, and when he woke up, he had severe post-traumatic retrograde amnesia, he had no idea who he or Katarina or anyone else was, and for reasons unbeknownst to her, that broke her heart.

Regardless of this, he seemed to be the most comfortable with her, and so he has been staying with her at her apartment ever since. And it is extremely weird, she isn't going to lie, living with someone who can't remember who she is even though he has known her since she was fifteen years old.
