-- MATTHEW JAMES LANSING !
-- NAME: Matthew James Lansing -- NICKNAMES: Matt, MJ, Matty (select few) -- AGE & BIRTHDAY: 28, June 17th -- BIRTH PLACE: Capeside -- ORIENTATION: Heterosexual -- OCCUPATION & SCHOOL GRADE: Police officer -- PLAYED BY: Ryan Reynolds
-- PERSONALITY !
-- SIMPLE: There are few things in life that Matt needs. As a child, he wasn't given much and was sometimes teased for it, but it never really bothered him. He was used to having the essentials- a bed, a tv, food, and a toilet, just like good old dad had always had for him. Matt's idea of letting go and having a night of relaxation is watching a sports game and drinking a beer, maybe eating some cheese and crackers. However, being a simple man doesn't just apply to his social life. Other beat cops might whine about the long hours they work or the horrible pay they get, but Matt will take anything given to him. He doesn't mind working ten hour shifts, because honestly he has nothing better to do. Matt feels like he might as well dedicate himself to helping others because he thinks that he's too far gone to help himself. -- FORGIVING: It seems like it's physically impossible for Matt to hold a grudge. Even when it comes to the most serious offenses, he can't be mad at people for long. It's almost like he feels guilty for making someone feel guilty, and that's just way too much guilt to handle. He even forgave his father for what he did, eventually. There's something about holding a grudge that seems unproductive to Matt, he feels that life is too short to have petty arguments. However, one person Matt holds a grudge with is himself. Somehow he decided to blame himself for the things that had happened in the past, and began harboring some self hatred about his decisions. Should he have followed her when she left? Why did she leave him? Although Matt finds it easy to forgive others, there's something about forgiving himself that seems out of reach. -- INCOMPLETE: Matt's life was never defined by his childhood. Even as he progressed into high school he didn't care about his lack of parents, or lack of school supplies. He wanted to move forward in life, because that's just how he wanted to live his life. However, the events concerning his daughter and the love of his life threw Matt into a deep depression. Ever since she left, Matt hadn't been the same. Rather than the ambitious teen he had once been, Matt decided that he just wanted to go on with his life with the mentality of getting it over with. Although his grandmother taught him not to let events define him, the sheer horror of what he had gone through at such a young age had formed his feelings of utter incompletion.
-- LOVES: baseball, his grandmother, cold beer, classic movies, the beach, his job, kids, having a house full of people, refried beans, apple pie, sundays -- HATES: cop shows, broken promises, warm beer, golf, chick flicks, complainers, diaries, monkeys, people who don't appreciate their lives, happy families, loneliness
-- HISTORY !
Matthew James Lansing's life was decidedly troubled from the get-go. He was born into a family of both violence and fear. His father was an abusive alcoholic, and his mother was a shaken former prostitute. It was extremely surprising for two of the worst off people in the sleepy town of Capeside to get together and have a child, but that's just how fate brought decided it. However, as soon as Irene laid her eyes on baby Matt she decided that she wanted to change to make the best life for him. For a while, Roger felt the same way. He got a job as a mechanic and began to attend AA meetings. Although Matt didn't have much for the first few years of his life, everything was fine.
However, things took a turn for the worst when Matt turned 8. His father lost his job, and began to drink again. Since he had no college education, and didn't want to try to help himself. As he spiraled into his old self, Irene panicked and tried her best to do things to protect her son. When Roger got violent she would have Matt run to the store or send him to play with his friends. However, one day Roger went into an unexpected rage and Matt watched helplessly as his father beat his mother unconscious. Luckily, a neighbor called the paramedics and Irene was rushed to the hospital. Since he was so young, Matt wasn't allowed to visit his mother. He stayed with his father for a few days and watched his father continue to drink himself to death.
Irene's mother, Nancy heard about her daughter and decided that her grandson was in danger. She made her way to Capeside and pried Matt away from his father and had him move in with her. Little Matt welcomed the change of environment but expected to move back in with his mother when she got out of the hospital. His expectations became out of reach, however, when Irene died of a blood clot in her brain. After the news of his wife dying, Roger skipped town and Matt never heard from him again. In the span of a few months little Matt's life had been turned upside down.
However, some good did come out of this horrible loss. Nancy loved Matt so much, and had the money to provide for him.. As he grew up, she provided him with the things he needed to succeed. He played baseball, had constant play dates with friends, and a tutor for math. Under his grandmother's watch, Matt blossomed from a heartbroken child into the perfect teenager. He entered High School with the hope for a good life. His life changed forever when he met the love of his life freshman year, even if they didn't start dating until they were sophomores. They had a healthy relationship, and Matt was head over heels in love. He denied a baseball scholarship so that he could stay in Capeside with her, and had every intention to marry her.
However, the July after graduation Matt found out that his girlfriend was pregnant. At first, he was met with anxiety and mixed feelings about having a baby so early. But, he began thinking about his relationship with her. He wanted to marry her, and the idea of having a true family made him excitedly await the arrival of their baby. He joined the police force right out of high school, but somewhat neglected his job because he just wanted to be around his family. It wasn't the perfect life, but Matt was happy and couldn't have asked for more.
When she went into labor, Matt was right by her side. He held her hand throughout the whole thing, and his nerves were out of control. However, when the baby suffocated on the umbilical cord, the couple was devastated. Naturally, the mother of the baby was hurting, but Matt was hurting too. He severely mourned the loss of his daughter and was extremely introverted. The only thing that Matt had to look forward to was going home to the love of his life and try to move on. But, she left. She told him that she loved him but that she had to go. Matt was heartbroken.
After she left, Matt spiraled into a horrible depression. He had no idea what to do with himself, he hadn't felt this depressed since the loss of his mother. A phone call from his grandmother helped him to get somewhat back into the groove of life. He focused all of his time on his work, and became a respected officer in the force. He hasn't a relationship, nor any sexual partners since his girlfriend left, and has been fine with being alone so far. Rumors had been swirling around that she was back, and honestly Matt had no idea if he could face them.
