Samson didn't leave his dorm often. Not because he was agoraphobic or anything. Just because socializing was not really one of his stronger points. And usually he had a lot of studying to do, as well. Which was what he was doing now. He knew that people thought he was crazy or something, but to be honest, he didn't really mind. Just meant they were less likely to come up and talk to him and have him make a fool out of himself by spurting out facts and saying words that most people he'd ever met had never heard of.
It wasn't that he was self righteous or anything, he just had an extensive vocabulary he liked to exercise often and he had never been any good at talking to most people outside of his family anyway. But now that he was angry with his family for never telling him the extent of his little sisters' cancer, he didn't really have anyone to talk to.
Except Avia, of course.
He and Avia shared a dorm, and he pretty much had to talk to her because if he didn't then it would be a very quiet, and tension filled dorm. He was almost positive he would not enjoy that. Though he would enjoy her not telling him off so often, he was sure it was a habit because she seemed to do it to everyone, but, still. He only rarely disputed anything she said, he didn't really care enough to fight her on anything, she was mostly right anyway and it was like arguing with a brick wall otherwise.
Unfortunately, he had realized that over time, his feelings for Avia were no longer.. Completely platonic. Somehow or other, he had dismissed everything that she had ever did that made him want to dunk her head into a toilet and he had fallen in love with her. Which.. Was weird for him. He'd never been in love before, and he wouldn't have chosen her if he even got a chance, sure, she had her moments, and she was beautiful, but most of the time she was really just plain rude. It was those moments though, those moments where she seemed to forget that she was supposed to be awful, that was what caught him. No way would she ever find out about this, though, at least not from Sam. She would mock him for ages, he knew for a fact, that he would never hear the end of it. So he'd keep his mouth shut. No use in trying for the obvious no, in his personal opinion. There wasn't a chance for him, the nerdy and very shy and awkward kid and the hot blonde bombshell roommate? Yeah, no. That never happened in real life.
Sam was now sitting on the couch at two in the morning, sleepless and restless, studying, like the good little college student that he was. He wasn't even sure if Avia had come home or not yet, to be honest, he'd been reading for hours and it was rather hard to get his attention when he was so absorbed in something like this.

Two in the morning, a usual time for Avia to just be getting back to her dorm, even during the week, she had been out with some friends and her heels clicked along the floor as she headed to her room. Sadly, the blonde had to share her dorm with a geek, a male geek at that, he was kind of cute but he was so beneath Avia that a lot of the time she forgot that he was even around. Self centred was a label that tended to stick to Avia quite well, if something wasn’t about her then she didn’t tend to care at all, if her name was mentioned though you had her full attention. She didn’t do it to be mean but she’d grown up and developed her personality, I guess you could say that the mean things she did were habits that had just never been targeted. The blonde had been psycho-analysed too many times to count, people assumed there had to be some deep rooted explanation for her behaviour but their problem was that they looked too deep; it was just a major cause of middle child jealousy. Avia wanted to be the baby of the family but she wasn’t, and she didn’t even get to be the oldest either.
Her room-mate was nothing like her and in a way that was a good thing, two personalities as big as Avia would not be a good combination. Sam though was pretty much the complete opposite of Avia, he was quiet and studious whilst she was outgoing and incredibly talkative, she had attitude and he just kept to himself. Avia prided herself on her appearance and her social status and when she first found out who her room-mate was she worried that he would be a detriment to her but people just sympathised with her, it wasn’t exactly her fault that she was paired with a nerd. She struggled living with him because of his lack of social skills, he didn’t really talk, and when he did it was usually stuff that just annoyed Avia, things that she felt she had to correct him on. To be honest that was the crux of their relationship, Avia making sure the boy knew where he belonged and was aware when he was wrong, which happened to be quite a lot.
She arrived at the dorm and opened the door to see the boy reading, the activity he was engaged in really wasn’t a surprise but the girl hadn’t expected him to still be up. “have you been in here all night?” she asked obnoxiously, he really needed to get a life, he was like a hermit crab. The blonde kicked off her shoes towards the growing mound of footwear and collapsed onto her bed, not really tired but at the same time a little bit worn out. Avia’s presence dominated the room whether she was in it or not, her stuff cluttered almost every surface and her shoes often made a bid of freedom from their place, she wasn’t exactly the neatest girl around. Then there was her guitar which stood pride of place with most of her other instruments pushed under the bed, she just didn’t have enough room. A pinboard hung by her bed which had photos and notes scattered all over it, some with messages from friends and others just song lyrics that she’d written.

.Sam's head slowly and exasperatedly raised after finishing the sentence he was on as he looked up to find that he was right- Avia hadn't come home yet, and as per usual, the words of greeting were harsh and repetitive to almost every other sentence he'd ever heard her say before. He frowned as he watched her stride across the room just to collapse on her bed.
“Oh, I don't know, Alderidge, what do you think? Because incontestably and unmistakably, naught else has the indecency to matter but your highness' royal presupposition.” his own words came out in a surprisingly and uncharacteristically cruel tone. Not that she would take it to heart, she may have those kind moments on her but most of the time she seemed about as shallow as a kiddie pool- what would she care if her lowly nerd roommate decided that she wasn't the center of the universe any more?
He was tired and he was grumpy, it didn't happen often but when Sam decided to snap back with her, he liked to use words that were either sure to confuse her or annoy her. Or both. Mostly both. One thing was for sure, if you actually got Samson to talk to you, you would almost always learn something new.
Having no further interest in reading, Samson snapped his book shut, tossing it on the table and turning around so that he was laying across the couch instead of sitting on it, and he stared blankly at the ceiling. “Don't see how it would matter to you anyway, who cares what I spend my time doing or where I do it? Certainly not you, I should be quite certain by now, wouldn't you think?” he stated point-blank, though he wasn't even sure if she was still awake. Sometimes when she came home she'd just pass out right off, no matter if Sam was still talking to her or not. She was a lot better listener when she was asleep, and sadly enough, Samson was a lot better talker when she was out, too.
Anyway, just another year or so, then he'd be out of her pretty blonde hair altogether, unless they both stayed in Capeside, he doubted he'd ever see her again. He still hadn't decided if that was a bad thing or not yet, though. Good, he'd never have to hear her whine and complain about anything and everything ever again. Bad, he would probably never see her again. Good, he'd probably never actually have the physical urge to stab anyone in the hand with a pencil again (not that he'd ever done it to her, but he had a much more vivid imagination than one might imagine). And bad, he'd probably never see her again.
All very compelling arguments to either want to finish college and move out of state or never leave Capeside.
Not that she'd not run the other way every time she saw his face, though. But still. He had a lot of reasons to stay in Capeside after college. His littlest sister, being the main one. Then again, that would also be the perfect excuse to run, he couldn't emotionally handle any of this, why try?
But Samson could never leave Milly, not even if he wanted to. She didn't deserve his anger and bitterness, though except for maybe Ruby, the rest of his family did. Not informing him of the seriousness of Milly's cancer if he was just going to find out about it later on, there was no reason for that. Rubes tried to protect him, that he understood, she had always tried to protect him, but he was a big boy now, there was no excuse for the rest of them.
He sighed softly at his own predicaments, though probably louder than he meant to, and ran a hand through his sandy brown hair, closing his eyes. If only so many things were different. Honestly, he didn't know what was wrong with him.

She sat up and looked at him as he retorted back, that was unusual, he was obviously feeling a little bit brave. Avia didn’t appreciate people making fun of her and she knew that Samson was using big words just to confuse her, and it was working. The blonde wasn’t as dim as people thought she was, they assumed that because she was a blonde and pretty self centred then she would lack academic skill, but she’d actually paid quite a lot of attention in school, she just didn’t tend to use what she learnt. He was getting cocky and it just annoyed the girl, what gave him the rights to talk to her like that, he should be happy that she was slapping him about now, she would usually but it was just too much effort so her retort had to be verbal, “well, I’m glad you understand the pecking order” she said rolling her eyes, he had called her a princess just to annoy her and comment on the fact that she felt the world revolve around her but she liked it that way, so she wasn’t about to argue.
Avia couldn’t wait to escape Capeside, she wanted to travel the country, playing sold out shows in every state before moving on to conquer the world. She could see it now, a packed O2 arena in London as she walked onto the stage everyone cheering her name. That was what the blonde wanted, she wanted the attention and the admiration but at the same time she also wanted to share her music, she wanted people to hear her stories and appreciate her voice, that was the side of things that most people didn’t understand. They assumed that Avia just wanted to be famous, that it was all about being in the spotlight and having people pay to see her but it wasn’t really about that, not deep down. Her music meant so much more to her than anyone understood, music was her escape but she acted like she didn’t need an escape, she seemed like she loved life but there were times when Avia wanted to be anywhere but where she was, that was where music came in. Her songs were the only place where the real Avia belonged, the lyrics portrayed a different person to the one sat in that dorm room, when one stage the real Avia had a chance to shine.
The blonde zoned out for a minute and then suddenly the boy was talking again, something about her not caring about what he was doing, he was really annoying her today. “oh Honeycutt, I just worry about your sanity, you’re going to be 60 and living on your own with a couple of cats” she said spitefully, using his last name just like he had done hers, but she but extra emphasis on the honey. Avia had a habit of using the word honey facetious, she used it to belittle people and so she was attempting that with his last name, it worked surprisingly well. She knew nothing of Sam’s home life because she didn’t bother to ask, though it was likely that Sam could name Avia’s whole family, she talked on the phone rather loudly and there were photos scattered all over her side of the room. She grabbed her pyjamas and headed into the bathroom, emerging in a small pair of thick shorts and a strappy white top which her bright pink bra was quite visible through, Avia didn’t care about the fact Sam was there, he was a geek for goodness sakes. The blonde threw her dress on the desk chair which tended to collect most of her clothes, she’d sort it out tomorrow but only because it was her favourite dress and she didn’t want it getting screwed up.

Sam raised his eyebrows as she sat up and turned around to look at him as he retorted, obviously surprised. He smirked a little at her expression, she wasn't used to his talking back to her and it showed plainly. For a second he thought she would bound back to him and smack him, but she didn't, instead just went with a more annoyed voice. “I think any old moron would know how your ‘order’ takes place." he muttered bitterly, putting his head back down and rolling his eyes just as she had.
Yep, she had definitely caught him in one of his moods.
They'd been roommates together for about three years now, but he normally would try to back off when he was in a bad mood, he'd just leave or ignore her, but honestly, he didn't feel like doing either today. Maybe he felt for her a little more than he should, but he didn't deserve how she treated him, honestly. And with all that was going on, too, though she didn't know nor did she even care to know most likely, what was going on with him or not. He was almost positive that if he was suicidal (which he wasn't, this was only objectively speaking) that she would only tell him not to bleed on her stuff.
Okay, only maybe. She might surprise him and like, throw him at a hospital or something instead.
Now, the next sentence that came out of the blonde's mouth was just as spiteful as his, but for some reason, when he heard it, all he could do was laugh. It sort of came out a strangled chuckle at first but before long he had turned over on his side and he was laughing into the corner of the couch. This was probably pretty strange to see anyway, whether she was making fun of him or not. See, Sam rarely thought anything was this funny, honestly. He didn't get most jokes, he was almost always the one who just did not see the humor in them, but always thought the really ridiculously smart quips were amusing. And there had actually been pretty few times he'd ever laughed this hard, Avia had probably never heard him laugh like this before, it was a rare sighting. Like a Chansey, only came out when least expected and never stayed around for very long. But that was just the poké!freak in him sneaking out now.
He allowed himself some quality laughing time before he finally answered her. “I can't say how much I appreciate your concern, but I've already capitulated all sanity I ever had, I'm more of a dog person, and with any luck, I'll be dead before I even reach sixty, thank you.” That last part was probably rather uncalled for, but Sam was on a roll, so he didn't even bother trying to stop himself by now.
To be honest, he wouldn't have even noticed that Avia went into the bathroom if he hadn't opened his eyes again to see that she was walking out in her pajamas, which he couldn't help but snort at. If he didn't know any better, he would think that she was taunting him with what he knew he couldn't have, and he shook his head again and decided that cramming a pillow over his face and letting out a muffled, sort of awful zombie-sounding groan was much more enjoyable than facing his own harsh and pathetic reality.
What made everything even more ironic was that Sam was actually pretty ripped, even though Avia would never believe it and Sam would never show it off. Just the fact that he was just as strong or muscular as most of the guys that Avia dated, it would be funny if it wasn't so terribly pitiful.

Avia was getting sick of the boys attitude but her mind was clouded from alcohol and she wasn’t really up to her usual speed, he was getting away with far more than he would if she was stone cold sober. She assumed that was why the boy had picked his moment, he knew that he could get some words in, in fact the girl was tempted to just fall asleep, he’d shut up then. Avia was bitchy, don’t get be wrong, but she had a soft side that she kept to herself, if people paid attention it’d be blindingly obvious. That was why Avia was who she was, if people paid attention to her music, her core, then they’d know that inside she just needed someone to understand, her lyrics were her truth. When her dad left it seemed like Avia was coping, she continued how she’d always been but she got worse, the manipulation increased and she dove headfirst into her music, you’d know how much it hurt her if you ever heard her sing ‘without you’. Some of the songs that Avia wrote weren’t about her own stories but most of them tended to have an underlying subtext, she liked it that way, it made them personal but at the same time it allowed her to keep herself to herself. Her songs made Avia like an open book but no-one had bothered to read them, they didn’t listen or notice the scribbles that covered her notebooks and pin board. Her lyrics told stories of love, heartbreak and abandonment, things she always kept to herself. Many would assume that Avia had never really loved a boy, but you’d be sadly mistaken.
She rolled her eyes as he said that any moron would know how her order took place, “of course, it’s common sense” she said fluffing her hair to make the point that beauty came before brains. She collapsed back on her bed and her and hair fanned across the pillow, bright blonde against the rich pink of the pillow. Avia’s hair was one of her greatest assets, it was the perfect colour and it naturally fell wavy, a trait that most girls would kill for. He was really annoying her, she wished he would just shut up, the girl’s ears were ringing and the boy’s incessant whining wasn’t helping at all. She began to hum to herself, hoping to block out the boy and make it apparent that she didn’t care about what he was going to say. She scowled when he laughed but she was lying down so it was unlikely that the boy noticed, it was just a reflex action. The last part of the sentence caught the girl by surprise, she found that sad and that was unusual for her. There were moments when Avia wished she just curl up and sleep forever but she soon got over it, she stopped letting people get her down and she found a way to twist it into a positive situation, the fact that the boy said he didn’t want to live to old age made her want to say something, but she couldn’t.
“well, just trying to help” she said in a teasing tone, she wasn’t really sure what to say, she was too tired for all this nastiness, she had hoped the boy would be asleep or just ignore her, she didn’t really expect to get into a heated debate. She knew Sam had a sharp tongue, he sometimes snapped back but it was unusual and it seemed like the boy had decided he would target Avia when her defences were low. She pulled her notebook out which had lyrics in it and she began to write words which were appearing in her head, it was strange she couldn’t really work out what she was writing out but the words, ‘I don’t want you, keep telling myself I don’t want you, I can’t have you, it’s crazy’ appeared on the page. Usually Avia made a conscious effort as to what she was going to write about but these words just seemed to come from her unconscious, a feeling hit her as she wrote but as soon as she was done it was gone again. Avia sensed the song was about forbidden feelings but she knew she’d turn it into something else, she didn’t like to make things obvious, she buried meaningful lyrics into songs with catchy beats, she didn’t want anyone to realise what she was really singing about.

Avia must have really been buzzed if she was letting Sam get away with this without slapping him around to get him to shut up and leave her alone. Which she did a lot of the time, even though he didn't deserve it.. at least half of the time. Sam wouldn't deny, he was very annoying often enough, even though mostly it wasn't voluntarily, until he thought about it he didn't know really what he was doing wrong. Now was an exception to that. He knew exactly how he was bothering his roommate. He also knew that he should probably quit it soon before he said something he'd later regret. Which didn't really happen often, actually, but when it did it was never pretty and he always had a problem with letting things go.
Sam really didn't know all that much about Avia. He knew that she had two sisters, Blair and Chloe. He knew she was nineteen, she wrote songs, she sang like an angel, she seemed to think she was better than everyone, including Sam (who, even though he knew he was smarter than her, let her believe it. Sam was smarter than most people he met anyway.), and she was so far out of his league it was almost funny. Sam didn't like to invade her privacy, so he left her stuff alone, or else he'd probably know a lot more about her than he did by now. But Sam had an extremely high respect for people's personal space because personally, he couldn't stand people going through his stuff without his permission.
He sighed as she let his slightly morbid wish off without an extremely snippy reply, and he reached up and rubbed his eyes. “I'm sorry.” He said dolefully, pursing his lips. “Bad day. Shouldn't take it out on you. I'll shut up now.” It was rather unusual for Sam to apologize to anyone who wasn't Ruby or Milly, but Avia really hadn't done anything, or at least, not enough, to provoke him into this, he felt a little bad about it, even though she would never apologize didn't mean that Sam couldn't be the bigger person, after all, even though being the bigger person was usually rather difficult when sometimes you just really wanted to be immature, just for a day, at the very least.
But being immature was something that Sam rarely got away with. He was too smart for that, he knew better and he couldn't stand it, he always felt guilty about acting like a brat. How Avia could do it ninety percent of the time was far beyond Samson's knowledge. He had a feeling that it was either a show or that she honestly couldn't help herself, but as before stated, he honestly did not know much about her at all. She could be a complete brat, just born that way, for all he knew. But he still, for whatever reason, doubted that.
Sam stretched his arms out wide as he yawned quietly and rolled off the couch, wiggling his toes and picking up his book before shuffling off quietly to his bed, running a hand through his thick sandy hair once again. He was getting tired now, it was pretty late for him, after all, and all the bickering was really just wearing him out.

It was strange but Avia just wasn’t in the mood to be bitchy, she’d had a great night with her friends and she didn’t fancy letting Sam win by souring her night, and getting into a fight with him would certainly do that. She knew that he was all talk; soon enough he’d apologise and keep his head down, as he’d said at the beginning of the confrontation, he knew his place and it was below her. It was common knowledge; everyone knew that the pretty girls were above the geeky boys in the social order, she was sure even aliens probably had the same status ladder, it just made sense. Most people say that it would do Avia good to suddenly become ugly but she’d probably still be as bitchy as ever, she’d just have less friends and spend more time alone, she’d become a recluse, Avia hates people seeing her when she hasn’t fixed her hair, let alone if her face was disfigured. Avia often comes across a self absorbed little princess and that’s because on the surface of it all, she was, that was the role she chose to play. The people who really understood the blonde were the ones who saw her at those moments when the mask slipped, when she wasn’t acting.
She nodded when he explained that he had had a bad day and that he shouldn’t have taken it out on her, too right. She hadn’t even been that mean to him and something inside of him had snapped, she hadn’t deserved it, well she hadn’t done anything more to deserve it this time than all the other times that he had kept his mouth shut, if he had been fine those times why wasn’t he now? Samson confused Avia, sometimes he looked at her in a way that no-one else had before but then suddenly it would change and it was back to that hateful, pity stare that seemed to be coming from him most of the time. She didn’t understand him and that annoyed her, she understood guys, she knew how to mess with their heads but to her Samson was like a closed book, it was like how Edward could read everyone’s minds but not Bella’s. The thought crossed Avia’s mind and she pushed it away immediately, eww, Bella and Edward were movie soulmates, there as no-way that her ‘final’ was going to be some geeky college kid, she had her mind set on bigger and better things.
Avia watched him head to his bed, she didn’t really know what to say but she almost felt guilty, he had just been reading peacefully before she interrupted and messed with him, Avia didn’t feel guilt too often. She looked at him, she had been meaning to ask if he would listen to her new song but she kept forgetting or thinking that he would ridicule her, but it was worth a try, “any chance you will listen to my new song? I won’t hit you too hard if you hate it” she said looking at him. She really did want some honest advice and it seemed that Samson was in the mood to stick up to her tonight. The song was called Nothing Compares and she’d written at college, they’d been told to tell a story and she had jumped straight on the love story train, heading straight into mediocre-ville. But she actually really liked it, it didn’t have too much truth to it but the way she sang it showed the glimmer of hope she had that one day she’d find that kind of feeling.

Sam was never really too sure about Avia. Sometimes she was the most annoying person in the entire world, and then at some short times, she seemed to actually have a personality worth knowing. That was the Avia he liked so much. She was smarter than people gave her credit for. Nicer than she came across as. But still, pretty awful the majority of the time. She seemed just as confused about him that he was about her sometimes. Which he didn't really understand. But it wasn't like she really even cared what he thought about her, not like she ever thought about him unless he was standing right there in front of her.
He was surprised when she seemed to accept it without bitterly commenting on what a terrible person or roommate he was, but he was even more surprised when she asked him to listen to her song. Samson was rarely the person she asked for anything, let alone to hear her songs. He did hear her sing quite often, but rarely actually to him. “Errr... Sure, of course.” he answered, sitting upright on his bed and crossing his legs Indian style, making a face as she promised not to hit him too hard if he hated it.
Now, honestly, he really doubted he'd hate it.
Her music seemed a lot deeper than he'd expected, from what he'd heard of it. But that was probably just him finding random meanings in things, which seemed to happen more often to him than anyone else he knew. “That's very reassuring, thank you.” He said, not being able to withhold the wry grin that came with his comment. “I promise I won't be too mean if I do hate it.” Though again, he doubted that would happen. But she didn't need to know that. No need to give her fuel for more nasty comments, he was certainly not telling him about his ”crush“ or whatever you deemed it that he had on her.
Sam didn't even know when said love or crush or whatever it was had come up, and why was so far beyond his knowledge it was almost funny. He wondered if Ruby would have any answers for him in this department. He didn't know, she didn't ever talk about having any inkling of a love life. Or maybe Spencer, he'd probably be less likely to know who Avia Alderidge was and more likely to know things about women or whatever. Sam was definitely not asking his father for advice though, no freaking way was that ever happening.
But Sam was just zoning out on her now, and he didn't want to miss her song. So he snapped himself out of it, shook his head and rubbed his eyes and looked back up. “Well, go on.” He urged, trying to keep all the enthusiasm he had for this moment out of his voice. Even though with Sam's nonexistent acting skills, he probably truly failed at that. |

Avia liked being hard to read, she found some people were like an open book and that was incredibly boring, I mean why bother to get know someone if you already knew everything about them from one conversation. Sadly, the blonde went too far the other way, people found it impossible to get through to her which meant that they gave up, leaving Avia to look after herself. She enjoyed being unpredictable, she liked seeing the caution in a persons eyes when they had to tell her something they knew she didn’t want to hear, they didn’t know how she’d react and that made her feel powerful. Okay, sometimes Avia does sound like your typical uber bitch and maybe she is but let’s think about this shall we, every uber bitch depicted in tv and film has a soft side, look at Regina George, all it took was for her to be hit by a bus and she turned into a lovely girl, and that Blair Waldorf, well she has her soft moments, plus she’d smack anyone that tried to hurt her friends. No-one is mean to the core, well maybe there’s the odd exception like Hitler and Osama Bin Laden but they are rare and I wouldn’t say Avia was anywhere near there level of evil… in comparison to them Avia is merely a kitty cat.
She smiled lightly as he agreed to hear her song and she climbed off her bed to get her guitar before returning to sit opposite him cross legged, placing the acoustic guitar on her lap. Most people found it odd when Avia played her guitar whilst sitting cross legged, in theory it shouldn’t work but she’d always done it and to her it was comfier than sitting normally, unless she had a foot stool to put her foot on and as that was under her bed somewhere this would have to do. She was scared, maybe she should just sing him a silly one about going out and drinking sambuca but there was something inside her telling her to play him nothing compares, that scared Avia though, it was like handing him her heart on a platter. Don’t get confused, the song has nothing to do with Sam, but to Avia her music was her soul and playing it to Sam in such a raw state was scary for the girl who hid behind a wall. “good, I will only appreciate constructive criticism” she said, the stress being on the second to last word.
The song began softly as she looked down at her fingers and the words began “walking down brick lane, and feeling blue”
[/i] the song was about having had mr perfect and having to move on. To Avia it was about the boy she met when she spent last summer in England, he was her prince charming but no-one knew about him, he knew the real Avia which meant that she was keeping the thoughts of him away from her life here. She’d finally opened up to a guy and seen how a relationship could work that wasn’t based on lust and alcohol. Now they were a million miles apart and Avia had moved on, she didn’t miss the guy, she missed what he encompassed, that feeling of trust and security. She’d never tell anyone but Avia was ready for a proper relationship, to give someone her heart and trust them with it, she just didn’t know how to attract that kind of guy, she was used to trying to pull guys and she was amazing at that, but all they wanted was a one night stand or maybe they’d stretch to friends with benefits, the sad thing was, Avia was just looking too far afield when really all she needed was right in front of her. This was pathetic. This much excitement over a song, and he hadn't even heard it yet. Sam couldn't even help from smiling when she smiled at his agreement to hearing her song. How pitiful was that? Honestly. The least he could do was keep from looking like such a lovestruck fool. His smile didn't vanish completely, though, it did soften a bit. Not that she even noticed, anyway. She didn't seem to notice a lot of things he did, anyway, so it didn't seem like a problem. He only smirked when she told him that she would appreciate constructive criticism. He didn't have anything to really say to that. Not like Sam was going to tell anything but the truth, he obviously sucked so horribly at lying. Criticism, he was good at. Constructive, not so much. Optimism was not his strong point, and you could tell. He was a smart kid, but he really did not have a lot going for him in the social interactments department. He knew facts, he liked facts, he understood facts, emotions, feelings, they were not things that he liked to deal with regularly, though, living with a female, even a female as seemingly cold as Avia, emotions were something that ran high, unfortunately for the both of them. If he hurt her feelings, he'd know, and he'd either have to deal with the consequences or apologize and deal with lesser consequences. He shut up when she began the song, watched her hands play the guitar for a few seconds before his eyes slowly raised back up to her face. Sam had heard Avia sing a lot before. But rarely actually to him. Not that this song had anything to do with Sam, obviously. The day that Avia wrote a love song about Sam was the day that he told her how he felt about her - meaning that it was never gonna happen. He knew that. But he still felt glad she was comfortable enough to actually sing the song to him, not just in front of him. Either that or she really felt bad for her deplorable roommate. The song was.. a lot deeper than Sam had thought that it would be. A lot more serious, definitely. His smile had disappeared into a thoughtful expression as the song progressed, and as it ended, he just sat there in silence and stared at her for a little while. He didn't really know what to say. "You have the most ethereal voice I have ever heard." He finally breathed, and then paused and sat back, shaking his head like he couldn't even believe he'd said that. "Errr. I mean, it was good. I'd buy it over Lady Gogo or Guru or Gaga or whatever her name is, anyday." He expanded as an obvious understatement with a halfhearted shrug. Sam didn't want her getting any ammunition against him, after all. Good was the safest adjective to go to. And obviously, a hint of a joke was the way to end it, and maybe she would forget about that first statement.

Avia was nervous and that was a pretty rare feeling for the girl who never seemed to have a care in the world. The blonde had confidence in her music, she knew she was good but for some reason singing to Samson made her feel full of butterflies. The song was a lot softer than the ones she usually sung, it spoke of love, crying and real emotions, something the normal Avia seemed to avoid at all costs. Sam had heard her singing her catchy songs, like Mama Do and It’s All About Tonight but he’d never seen her like this, absorbed in the music and absorbed in her story. Avia’s soul was in every lyric of that song and it was blindly obvious, for the three minutes that she sang every wall came down and she was stripped bear, it seemed wrong for anyone to see her so vulnerable. But here she was, showing her soul to her room-mate and she had no idea why. Sometimes ideas came over Avia and she regretted them pretty soon after, this was one of those times. Avia hid herself from most people, she’d happily sing her songs to a sold out concert arena but playing them whilst seeing her families reaction was something that terrified the blonde to the core, she hated the intimacy of it all. On a stage no-one could see her eyes or her facial expressions, they could see she was enjoying herself but they wouldn’t be able to see every lyric create a different look within her eyes.
She had a feeling that Sam wouldn’t say anything mean, he was in a horrid mood but he tended to be pretty peaceful, not wanting to incite problems and criticising her music would be the quickest way to incite an argument. If people thought they’d seen the nasty side of Avia they were wrong, music was her sensitive side, and as the same with all people she gets most aggressive when that side of her is being targeted, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Avia was expecting Sam to say nice things, I mean give the guy a break he was being ballsy but he didn’t have a suicide wish. When he spoke the girl looked at him with a confused expression, was he making another dig at her, she hated it when he used words that she didn’t understand, it was mean and unnecessary and he did it on purpose in a bid to belittle her. However, the boy corrected himself straight away, saying that she had a better voice than Gaga, which Avia felt was so obvious that it didn’t really need mentioning. That was the thing about all those ‘pop stars’ they didn’t write their own music, hell most of the time they didn’t even sing their own songs, Avia didn’t want to be one of those people, she wanted to be the real deal. She’d made herself a deal, if she became famous then the day she mimed was the day she quit, she wanted every live performance to be exactly that, she didn’t want to be just some blonde singing along to a pre-recorded track.
The blonde looked up at him, “ethereal?” she asked copying his pronunciation because she’d never heard that word before in her life. She nodded at the Gaga comment, “well that’s not exactly hard” she said moving her guitar to her side and placing it on the bed softly. Avia really wasn’t sure what else to say to the boy, it wasn’t like he was going to come out with anything useful like it would be better a semi-tone lower or that line doesn’t quite fit, he was just like a doll that she could sing to, his face didn’t even portray any readable emotions. She hated people like that, though most of the time she was one of them, she wished she could read everyone but no-one could read her, that’d just be perfect. She noticed his use of the word good and it made the girl want to throw her guitar at him, she was way more than good, she was fabulous, she was talented and she was gorgeous, that doesn’t equate to good. He was in a pissy mood though, it was a silly idea of hers to play to him, he was never going to be kind, not that she deserved his kindness, she just expected it.

The one time he wasn't actually trying to confuse her with his big words, he did it. Sam frowned as Avia didn't seem to understand what he'd even said, and out of habit, instead of waiting to think about what he was saying, he explained himself. "Ethereal. Heavenly. Beautiful... Perfect." He mumbled, looking back down at his hands to avoid any and all chance of eye contact. Because what Avia really needed was another compliment. Sam was afraid one day she might just spontaneously combust from all the compliments she daily received. If that were at all possible. But as it wasn't, she would only have an impossibly inflated ego as compared to Sam and his lack of compliments from anyone other than his sister and professors.
Avia knew she was talented as much as Sam knew he was smart. It was basically an undeniable fact. However, Sam could live without compliments and he could deal with all the put downs that people put him through, Avia never had to endure what he had to the extent of his knowledge and he was sure that she had never lived a day in her life without at least a single compliment. So the slightly hurt and disappointed look on her face was understandable. Ridiculous and possibly downright stupid, but understandable. So Sam held back a sigh and attempted to think of a way to elaborate without sounding like a lovestruck moron.
He didn't know what she wanted him to say to her, the truth would be awkward and a lie would be obvious. And using big words as he usually did would just make her angrier, unfortunately, whether he wanted to or not he seemed to do that every time he used his vocabulary. "It was better than good." He paused, and sighed at his own lack of social skills. "Well, think of it this way. Do you ever do anything- and I do mean anything- short of flawless?" he shook his head meaningfully. "No. You don't. And you know it, so why you're fishing for compliments when you know just exactly how exceptional you are, it's beyond me." And then turned around and flopped on his back, rubbing his temples and closing his eyes. If that wasn't awkwardly revealing enough for her, he didn't know what would be.
And honestly, what did she expect from Samson Honeycutt, of all people? She knew full well that he had no talent in compliments or saying what he wanted to say, this was basically abuse right here, mental abuse. Why didn't she just shoot him in the head, he would very much like to know. His conversational skills were that of a two year old, direct and to the point, when he was hiding something it was evident, even if what he was hiding was extremely hard to figure out. But no one seemed to take pity on him and his awkwardness, none but his family, most of the time. Even so, she had seemed so afraid to sing it for him, and he was no help at all for her. But Sam didn't know anything about music critiquing. If he liked something, he liked it. If he had something to say about it, he would.
Sam didn't have anything bad to say about it, and he didn't know how he had even managed to say what had already been said, he was no help at all and he knew it, and he figured that Avia would have guessed it. Why would she want to sing to him anyway? It wasn't like she liked him or anything.

She listened as he explained the word, it was far more complimentary than she had expected and she was pleased to hear all the synonyms that he offered, the word he used summed up and she wanted her music to be. To most Avia seemed perfect, she was pretty, had blonde hair that most would die for and on top of that, she had a personality that meant no-one stood in her way. However, the blonde saw herself in a very different light, she knew she was pretty, she knew she was talented but she also knew she was a bitch. Thing was, knowing that and resenting it didn’t make Avia change her ways, she just decided she would never really like herself and she took it all in her stride, as long as everyone else liked her it would make up for the fact that she didn’t… it doesn’t make much sense to outsiders but to Avia it was crystal clear. That was why she kept herself hidden, she knew people disliked Avia the bitch but it’d be worse if they disliked Avia the sensitive musician, which was why she kept that part to herself, it meant no-one could truly hurt her, no matter how hard they tried. It was a tried and tested measure by many girls across the world but in the end they showed themselves, Avia had no intention of doing that, being who she was was working so far, she had boys flirting with her wherever she went and she had girls surrounding her it, it was the way she liked it. She focused on ignoring the fact that the boys just wanted in her bed and the girls just want in her wardrobe, that was all she had to do.
The girl’s eyes widened as the boy asked if she did anything short of flawless, it started off as a compliment and then becoming more and more mean as he went out, Avia had just opened up her heart and soul to the boy and he’d thrown it back in her face, they didn’t understand each other and it was likely that they never would. The two had contrasting personalities and that was obvious to anyone that encountered them, you know how some people say that opposites attract, well these two just seemed opposites. They didn’t really converse and when they did it usually ended up bitchy and argumentative so it was better if they both kept to themselves, problem was Avia wasn’t very good at that. Avia was a pretty talkative person but and sadly this didn’t change even when she was around people she didn’t really like, and as she had nothing nice to say to Sam she tended to say things which weren’t very nice, she never really grasped that whole don’t say anything at all concept. Some would say that Avia had massive middle child syndrome whilst others would just say there was no excuse for being a bitch and to be honest they are probably both right. The blonde got pleasure from other people’s pain, she was like a walking poster child for schadenfreude. Not that Avia would know that word obviously, she’s not exactly fluent in German and if you hadn’t yet noticed she doesn’t really have the greatest vocabulary.
“Well, aren’t you a joy to be around this evening” she retorted, rolling her eyes before placing her guitar back on its holder, that really had been a waste of time. The blonde grabbed a hair bobble and quickly tied her hair into a fish-tail plait, that was how she slept with it every night, she wasn’t going to wake up with bad hair now was she? Avia was fed up of the ‘conversation’ and so she pulled her duvet over herself and faced the wall, she could easily sleep with the lights on so she wasn’t bothered whether Sam felt like sleeping or not. Avia didn’t get why he was being so grumpy, she didn’t see the nice side of his behaviour, she failed to notice that he’d called her music perfect and said that everything she did was flawless, she just heard the frustration in his voice and took everything as negative, that was just Avia. The blonde was used to getting compliments but not complex ones, she knew how to respond to ‘hello gorgeous’ or ‘I’d kill for those shoes’ but she never usually got told things like Sam was telling her today, which would explain why she was completely in the dark on what he was saying or how to respond to it, she was lost.

Sam's eyebrows flew up in shock, and then knitted together in absolutely protest as she retorted to what had originally intended to be a compliment. He only snorted in a despicable manner and crossed his arms against his chest defensively, narrowing his eyes as she looked away and put her guitar up, shaking his head. "Well, I'm ever so sorry I just can't do anything even relatively correct." He growled angrily, half to himself and half to her, as he ripped his blanket down and snuggled under it, turning the opposite way also and giving up on this entire conversation, if you could even call it that, altogether. He couldn't figure out whether or not he had explained himself badly or if she just genuinely didn't understand anything he was talking about. She wasn't a complete idiot, but she did have those moments, and he did have a terribly bad way of explaining himself.
Samson honestly couldn't see how she could misinterpret anything into negativity from what he'd said, though he usually couldn't anyway. Sam was never one to sugarcoat things, which seemed to be something Avia was looking for, though it wasn't like he'd told her she sucked or anything, quite the opposite, what was her problem, anyway? A compliment, that was what it had been, twisted into something unimaginably wrong in her mind. It felt like she really had it out for him some days, this apparently being one of them. Just what she wanted him to say, he would very much like to know. He didn't do things simply, he took everything too seriously and it was very obvious, as well. He couldn't help it, though. He was just born this way, taking everything literal and having some serious issues with things like emotions and conversations and expressing himself, things that Avia had apparently never found a problem in. What, was he the only person in the world who felt like this?
Statistically, he knew it was improbable, someone somewhere at some point felt just this way, but it was hard to imagine, someone else going through this difficulty socially and emotionally, but managing to live with it anyway. Probably doing a lot better at it than Sam, while they were at it. So much for staying on Avia's good side, however. It sadly looked like he had blown that extremely slim chance right out the window, all on his own, not needing any help from anyone at all. At least he knew he could do some things all by himself, however. Though it wasn't altogether comforting knowing that one of the very few things he could do so very well was anger his roommate, the one that he only happened to have feelings for. Truly. It was almost painful to even think about. |
