the overview
a couple of years ago, further devastation invaded into nickolai tennyson's life. go figure. his long-term girlfriend, and the mother of his child, left him. she just couldn't do it anymore. sure, nickey needed it. he needed to develop into a real adult, and get his act together, and get a job. he needed to learn how to take care of halley. on the downside, it hit him emotionally. how else was he supposed to react? so over the past couple of years, while his responsibility and love for his daughter has grown, his compassion for the rest of the world has decreased. he receded into his tiny, immediate family versus finding support from others. he figured he would be able to get through fatherhood, if not for himself, but for his daughter. he owes it to her. she is his daughter. it's his job to provide her with a home with a stable, happy environment. it's the entire reason why he never went back to college after dropping out, and why he's just some waiter in some restaurant. falling back in love, or even meeting anybody, was not in the cards.
of course, that doesn't mean it won't happen. enter the woman. of course, she could be just as damaged as he is, or be just as preoccupied. he truly is eager to love again, he just doesn't realize it. and tenn is horribly hesitant and nervous about the entire prospect. he's been there, done that, and gotten tossed out in the trash. he doesn't exactly want to go through it again. if life were easy, nickolai would just be able to continue to work, maybe have time for night classes. if it went as planned, he'd be able to get through the next eighteen or so years focusing on solely his daughter. but this woman is different. well, maybe she isn't especially different, but she is to him. he keeps running into her, and after some awkward tension, he knows that he isn't just indifferent. he can't stop thinking about her. he really wants to do something about it, but honestly, he's scared to death. obviously, he's been trying to cover it up. he refuses to try and give her the right signals. the last thing he needs is a repeat experience. so will she be able to get through to him? will she leave and find someone else? does she even care about his feelings, does she even know?
they can get together. they can awkwardly never get together. she could move on. she could not return the feelings. really, it's all up to whoever fills this and how it plays out.
or she could even be the ex. she could be back in town for god-knows-what reason. tenn could definitely still have feelings for her, and if she were to show up and get in touch with him it would be swell. (or if they even just ran into each other in public.) he would be freaking out over why she was back and making contact with him, but he could be persuaded into getting back together and giving their love story a second shot.
