-- MADELINE JANE NOLAN !
-- NAME: Madeline Jane Nolan -- NICKNAMES: Maddie, Mads -- AGE & BIRTHDAY: November Third, Eighteen years -- BIRTH PLACE: Capeside -- ORIENTATION: Heterosexual -- OCCUPATION: HS Senior, works at a bowling alley. -- PLAYED BY: Mary Elizabeth Winstead
-- PERSONALITY !
-- INTELLIGENT: Madeline has worked her entire life to graduate at the top of her class, and although things have changed (to an extent), she is definitely intelligent in most ways. She's not a genius, but she can hold her own in a debate and she can maintain a 4.0 grade point average with her heavy course load. She's used to working to get what she wants so she's a quick learner when she needs to be. She's street smart as well as book smart.
-- WITTY: She always has a comment for everything. Her humor is based on primarily wit; she's quick and good at shutting people down if they're arguing with her. Her humor isn't always in good nature, though. Sometimes she'll take a stab at something sensitive or personal or anything else she feels the need to do. She isn't malicious, but she's careful and she doesn't stand for people being stupid with her.
-- GUARDED: Maddie doesn't like to trust people easily. She's shut out her family and the majority of her friends, and that door is shut pretty tight. She's watchful of emotions around casual friends and acquaintances and often feels the need to start pushing away whenever she feels that they're getting to be too close. She's afraid, she's hurt, and she wants to make sure she doesn't make too many mistakes when it comes to the people in her life.
-- VULNERABLE: When someone is let into her life, they have complete control over her emotions. That's a big reason why her boyfriend has been able to get away with what he's been doing. It's because she relies so heavily on the people she loves that they can just do what they want with her. Of course, it takes awhile to reach this point, as stated above.
-- IRRITABLE: She doesn't like to tolerate bullshit or people or... Anything, really. She's civil with people, but she's easily set off and liable to snap at any point. If she likes you, she likes you. If she doesn't, she won't talk to you. But the smallest of things are likely to put her in a sort of bad mood, almost, and while she's not eternally pissy, it's best to watch what's said in her presence.
-- REALIST: Madeline is a very logical person. She doesn't like to deal with the things that have a very small chance of happening. She thinks things through a lot and doesn't get her expectations up too high. If anything, she uses this tactic to keep herself from being disappointed. She doesn't dream too far ahead or too big- actually, her dreams are more like goals.
-- IDENTITY SEEKING: Although she does know what she wants, lately she isn't sure who she is as a person. She used to be so sure of herself- always busy, looking ahead towards the future. But ever since all of the shit began to happen, her priorities have shifted. She doesn't know where to take her life or how she wants to be or how she wants to handle things and she's just going through her daily life, just trying to live it. But she wants to figure it all out. She's tired of things being the way they are.
-- LOVES: her boyfriend, traveling the world, learning, wit & sarcasm, casablanca, distractions, her math teacher, reading, sneaking out at night, stress smoking, thinking about the future, logic, isolation, foreign languages, the local news. -- HATES: her boyfriend, her family, capeside, feelings, most people, thinking about the past, ignorance, dreaming, showing her true self, group projects, not being able to sleep.
-- HISTORY ! Madeline was born to Henry and Alisha Nolan, right in Capeside. The family, although not terribly rich, was comfortable with their finances and their standard of living. As a kid, she was very proactive- always trying to learn new things, always wanting to be involved. When she was thirteen, her parents gave birth to another child (male), and things were... Decent. Comfortable.
For awhile, the family had no more than the usual amount of issues. During this time, Madeline became ambitious. When she reached High School, she became involved in as many clubs as possible, as well as working to maintain a 4.0 grade point average, all with a full course load. She believed that the key to a successful life was to be the top in High School; not necessarily socially, but in every other aspect. Still, she fell into the crowd of more popular kids due to her active involvement, despite her overall disinterest. Her Sophomore year, she began to date the man she's still with today.
The summer before her Junior year, her father lost his job and hard times hit the Nolan family. After a year, he still didn't find anything steady, and Alisha was getting restless. Henri had taken up drinking and Alisha, unable to take it anymore, took the youngest Nolan child and left the family.
Madeline took it harder than her personality suggested she might. By the time school started up in the fall, she had done a complete one-eighty. The only person she hadn't drifted from was her boyfriend. She dropped out of all of the clubs and stopped caring. Her father was drinking all of the time and suddenly, her only goal was to get out of Capeside. Escape her life.
Later on in the year (around November), her boyfriend was caught drinking and lost his full-ride football scholarship that he had come to depend on. Without it, he wouldn't be able to go to college. He lost his job trying to fix things. His parents ragged on him too much. And suddenly, the only thing left was Mads. It was around this time that Madeline began to spend more time befriending her math teacher, and he felt like he was being betrayed, like she was pulling away. He began to verbally abuse her in January, and now she's just trying to get by, not at all sure what to do.
For once, Madeline Nolan does not know who she is.
