Parties did not tend to be Josiah’s main scene. Sure, he was friendly with random people and loved to have some human interaction, but there was a difference between a chat after class and a group of drunken college students all in close proximity. Having fun was a lot easier when your mental capacities were still in full working order. But, then again, Josiah never had been much of a drinker. Maybe a glass of something now and again or a bottle of beer, but nothing like the majority of lower level college students; nothing like the consistent binge drinking that permeated the campus lifestyle. There were exceptions to every rule, of course, but you typically didn’t find them in the midst of a college party on a beach. Unless Josiah was there. He hadn’t originally planned on coming, but his next door neighbors had all but dragged him out by his hair (easy to do considering he had so much of it). There was no choice but to make an appearance. If he was lucky, he’d be able to slip out after not too long and get some work done before collapsing into his bed for the night.
What could it hurt, right? Josiah would head down to Heart’s Desire Beach for an hour or two, maybe bring a book with, and be out of there before it was too obnoxiously late. Given the nature of parties, he wasn’t expecting luck to be on his side. That wasn’t to be left to fate, though; Josiah wasn’t one for just randomly walking about without keeping himself prepared. Carrying an acorn with you isn’t something normally done… unless you’re Josiah Connelly, in which case you keep it with you almost all the time. Practicing superstitions wasn’t something that was done by the majority of people anymore. They had seen their hay day; come and gone and were hardly recognized anymore. For Josiah, superstitions dictated quite a few of his actions. Such as him carrying around an acorn for good luck and never getting in and out of the bed on the same side. He started adopting the customs several years ago, though he was never quite sure where he started learning about or believing in them. But, they stuck, and now he was fully committed.
Grabbing his shoulder bag and pulling on his hat, he headed out the door. The walls in his apartment were paper thin and, because of that, he was already aware of the fact that the couple next door headed out about fifteen minutes ago. Not that he wasn’t willing to walk alone; but the motivation to head to a party that he didn’t even seem that interested in when he had to be by himself was rough. Yawning, his gaze trailed over the streetlights as he turned towards the beach at a steady pace. Within a few minutes he could hear the music that was booming from the group of people that had already collected on the beach. Coupled with shouts and people talking, it was not hard to locate the bulk of the gathering. Pausing at the edge of the sand, Josiah looked over the scene. If he stayed towards the outer edges, maybe he’d be able to avoid the majority of the incredibly obnoxious, drunk students and find a semi decent person to talk too. If not, he still had his book in his bag and it’d provide some about of entertainment and he’d be able to say that he came.
“Busy place,” They were spoken to himself, mumbled lightly under his breath as he looked to find a good place to sit down. Feeling the sand give under his feet as he walked, he let his gaze drift out towards the ocean. At least they picked a good position for the party. Now, if only the music was a little less loud and there were a few less kegs around. Dropping down to the sand, he sat back and dug his elbows in behind him. Since moving to Capeside, this was certainly one of the feelings he had never gotten used to. There weren’t beaches like this in Detroit. No ocean views or comfortable, sandy places to lie down. After a moment of getting his clothes properly sandy, he glanced around and noticed another person that was somewhat away from the crowd. Pushing himself up and wiping a bit of the excess sand off his jeans and sweater, he headed towards the other boy. Pausing as he got there and motioning beside him, Josiah offered a smile. “Mind if I join you?” Without really waiting for a response, he took a seat and resumed his previous position of resting back on his elbows and glancing out at the ocean. It didn’t matter how loud the music was just a few yards away or that there were people everywhere, Josiah thought it was peaceful. It was easy to block out the unnecessary sounds by focusing on the waves and, now, the boy next to him.
“Not much or a party guy. You?”
If nothing else, he could start a pleasant conversation and occupy himself that way. It wouldn’t really result in a lot of studying, but at least he’d have a good time. That’s what people were supposed to do at a party, right? Have a good time. Sounded like a plan to Josiah. Words;; 900, on the nose. People in Capeside didn’t seem to understand the concept of cold weather. Okay, so it wasn’t winter anymore, but it was still Massachusetts, and it was still a bit chilly. Spring had only really just started, and hadn’t warmed up the coast yet. Yet Teddy’s peers still insisted on a beach party. Well, not exactly his peers. The college students his peers were friends with. Still though, he found himself wondering whose bright idea it had been, as he made his way down a sand dune towards the spot. Trailing behind his friends. Shivering slightly in the nippy air. Wouldn’t it have been better to hold off on the outdoor parties until the weather really warmed up? Though, Teddy had an inkling that the temperature of the night air didn’t really matter to the masses. That they were mostly planning on getting so drunk that it just didn’t matter that they were cold. Which was all good and well for the masses, but what was a boy who didn’t exactly drink a lot supposed to do? Sit on his butt swilling diet cokes and freeze all night, that was what. Which, unfortunately, did not sound like much fun to Teddy. He’d much rather be inside watching a movie marathon or something.
There was also the sand. He wasn’t a big fan of sand getting into everything. He liked the ocean though, so that made up for the constant sand he was plagued with living in a sea-side town as he did. There were always positives and negatives in life, and it was about weighting them up. Trouble was, he was having trouble seeing the positives in this situation. If his girlfriend had been there, things would have been better. However the lovely little thing that she was had given him leave to go without her, while she was bed-ridden with the flu. Honestly, Teddy had been half hoping she’d want him to stay with her. He’d promised his friend though, that he’d tag along on this suicide mission. Really, Teddy had low expectations of the night, no matter how ‘hot’ his friend had assured him that the college girl that had invited them was. It wasn’t her attractiveness that he was questioning though, it was if this college girl would give his fellow high school senior the time of day (or night as it were) when she was drunk and surrounded by guys her own age. His friend was just a little too hopeful that something amazing was going to happen at the party.
None the less, Teddy watched as said friend, and the other high school students that had tagged along disperse into the party. It was funny how grown up a high school student could feel at a college party, even if it was no more sophisticated than the ones they threw themselves. Shaking his head in amusement at his peers, Teddy headed to an open esky- which was really just a big tub of ice. No fancy drink keepers here. Gingerly, he fished out a can of diet coke, not wanting to freeze his hand off in the process, and looked around. His friends seemed to have already found sub-groups of the party to slip into, which left him on his own. Which, while wasn’t ideal, he was okay with. Parties just weren’t his thing, and he wasn’t one to weasel his way into a group of strangers. Though, oddly enough, he had no problem socializing in smaller settings. He must have just missed the party gene. It was probably handed out in puberty around the same time he was in line for comic-con tickets or something. Which, given the chance, he wouldn’t have done differently by the way. Especially if it was the year he had met a few of the Buffy cast members.
Lost in his own reverie of better things, Teddy made his way over to a large log of drift would that he could only assume was left in the sand by the tide. To Teddy, it looked like the perfect place to park himself. At least he would save his grey jeans from sand if he was sitting on something. Once comfortable, or as comfortable as one could be sitting on a dead tree, he opened his can. Taking a long sip before pushing the can into the sand, creating a crater for it to sit inside. That way it couldn’t be knocked easily, or fall over as the sand shifted. With his behind settled, and his can safe, Teddy was free to return to his thoughts, so it wasn’t odd that the other male’s voice startled him. Looking up, Teddy found himself smiling. He gestured to the spot beside him as a casual way of implying that he was fine with it. Not that it mattered though, as the older boy had already taken it upon himself to sit. Teddy found himself looking up and down the man as he reclined back on his elbows, taking in the shape of his silhouette. Heh. Interesting.
Dragging his eyes away from the way his chest was curved, Teddy re-focussed his eyes on the man’s face. He gave a nod and a small laugh. “Not really, no. Just here to support a friend’s doomed attempt at wooing the college girl who invited him.” With another chuckle, he looked back towards the bulk of the party goers to see if he could locate his friend. He couldn’t, so instead he turned back to his intriguing looking new found friend. “What drags you out into this misguided party location?” He asked, raising an eyebrow.

No matter how long he thought about it, Josiah could not see the appeal of drinking copious amounts of liquor. It was one thing if you were going out for drinks and had one or two. If you were with a group of friends and you were just planning on kicking back and talking and generally having a good time, the main theme of the evening wasn’t the alcohol, it was the company that you were with. But at a party, it was all about seeing who could pass out first. Quite honestly, it was confusing to Josiah. Did people not realize how ridiculous it looked to be piss drunk and stumbling around? Once his mind started dwelling on that concept, he wondered why so many parties were held on the beach. Sand wasn’t known for being the most stable ground. People that were completely sober were still able to easily trip due to the lack of solid footing and flat surface. Now, add in a few drunken people and you have a recipe for disaster… or hilarity, depending on where you were at. At the moment, Josiah was in the right place. He just had to wait until everyone was ready to pass out and then he could watch how they all faired on the sandy beach.
Smiling a bit, he refocused his attention on his companion and tilted his head back a bit. He hadn’t exactly chosen the best position to be in if he wasn’t to carry on a conversation. Sure, it was comfortable, but he practically had to bend his neck backward to get a good view of the boy. And, since Josiah was not a contortionist that would be easier said than done. Rather than attempt to break his neck, he simply sat up a bit and turned around, facing the new kid rather than the ocean and leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees. Now that he was looking at him, he was cute. Didn’t quite look old enough to belong at a college party, but he seemed to fit just fine. Aside from the fact that he’d separated himself from the group, that is. Josiah couldn’t blame him. He’d already gone over all his own reasons for leaving the group in his own head. If he was a high school student at a party like this, he’d want to stay as far away from the action as possible. The possibilities of what could happen in the midst of a gathering like that were endless, and he didn’t want to experience any of them first hand. Being friendly was one thing; being molested was another thing altogether.
“Doomed? He’s got time yet. Just wait until all the college girls get a few drinks in them and it’ll be considerably easier.” Josiah smiled a bit, shrugging his shoulders casually and letting his gaze slide back over towards the bulk of party-goers. He wasn’t insulting college girls; not in the slightest, but it wasn’t exactly hard to realize that many of the girls that showed up at these kinds of parties weren’t coming just to enjoy the scenery. Unless by scenery you meant all the college boys. Josiah had never really seen something quite as crazy as wasted college girls. Higher brain function was pretty much impossible by the end of the night at these things. Fun time, right? He wondered how many girls were going to find out they were pregnant in the next few weeks because someone was too drunk to remember a condom.
Leaning back a bit again, he dropped his hands from his knees to behind him, propping himself up and making it easier to both get comfortable and see the boy in front of him. “Neighbors. I think they use things like this as an excuse to make-out in public.” Grinning a bit, he let himself focus on the features of the boy. He certainly was cute, even though the retreating light from the setting sun made it increasingly harder to focus on the finer details. It was hardly seven o’clock and it was already relatively dark out. Thankfully, with spring getting faster underway, the days were getting longer. “They thought I needed to get out of the house apparently, so they dragged me along with.” He paused long enough to see what the boy’s reply would be when he realized that he hadn’t yet introduced himself.
“It’s a nice enough night though, right?” He smiled, sitting forward and moving close enough to offer his hand. “Josiah. Sorry for not introducing myself sooner, and for just butting in on your quiet time.” At least half of that was true. He really was apologizing for not introducing himself. However, butting in on his quiet time was the least of his worries. In fact, he really didn’t care all that much at all. He seemed friendly enough and that was good enough for Josiah. It meant he would have to study and that he might actually get some redeeming qualities out of this evening when he otherwise wouldn’t have. Because, honestly, what’s so important about reading a book for an upcoming test? That was all just unnecessary stuff. Something like that, at least. In the back of his mind, Josiah knew it would result in a few late nights in the coming week, but for right now it just meant he had a change to have a good time.

Teddy watched as the other young man switched his position. It was a more practical for a conversation, sure. However the young man found himself frowning just slightly at the change of view he now had. Not that this guy’s face wasn’t nice (it was actually really attractive) however there had been something about the way Josiah’s body had curved before that Teddy had enjoyed. It wasn’t the first time he’d appreciated the male form before. Even though he was in a committed relationship with a girl. That was as far as it ever really went for Teddy though- he just appreciated men. He’d never really felt more than that. That wasn’t to say that he would be unhappy if he did (besides the obvious complications of the fact he was taken of course). He was open to whatever his sexuality may throw at him. Which was a rather mature mindset for someone of his age, but then again, Teddy had never really followed the rules on what a teenage boy was supposed to be like. They weren’t supposed to own an impressive collection of Disney movies nor were they supposed to have Buddy Holly- esque suites, but that didn’t stop Teddy.
Tearing his attention away from what the young man looked like and to what he was saying, Teddy tilted his head to the side to re-consider his friends chances. “Hmm.” He mused softly for a moment, before shaking his head. “No, I still don’t think he’d have much of a chance.” He said with a nod. “See, even a drunk college girl- or really most girl’s actually, given the option between a muscular jock type college guy, and a weedy high school senior who’s breath smells like cheetos.. Well, I know who I’d be choosing.” Pausing, Teddy frowned. “Actually I’d pick cheetos breath every time. However, I’m not a typical girl- or any girl at all, and I’m almost certain most girls would choose that first guy.” His theory, of course was a rather large generalization, but the sad thing was it was true. Which, wasn’t that how things became a generalization? They were true so often that people just started expecting them to be true? Shrugging his shoulders a little, Teddy attempted to pull himself out of his train of thought. Trust him to get lost on a useless tangent. Especially one that didn’t matter at all in the grand scheme of things.
Raising a bushy eyebrow, Teddy looked over the young man. He didn’t come across as the sort that would let others dictate things to him. Which made Teddy think that he at least had some small desire to attend the party, or he’d have just flat out refused. Teddy, for example, was there as moral support for his friend and wouldn’t have come otherwise, no matter how much he was begged. However, he didn’t think he knew Josiah well enough to probe his reasons any deeper, so instead he just nodded, smiling. “Well if exhibitionism floats your boat...” He grinned a little, shrugging casually, before reaching out to slip his hand into the other man’s for a firm handshake. “Teddy. And you think?” He shivered a little, as if on que. “I thought it was a bit cold really. The sky is really clear though, which is nice.” Realizing his hand was still in Josiah’s, he blushed deeply and quickly pulled his hand away to save himself from any further embarrassment.
(sorry it’s so short, my muse is being crummy..)
