Growing up in a home where there wasn’t too much extra money to run out and spend, Ariana had never been big on clothes shopping. Her wardrobe was on the rather small side, all her clothing fitting into the one dresser she kept in her room. The idea of blowing money on tons of clothes was silly to her, there were many more important things to spend her money on, she had the essentials and it was good enough.
Today she was in need of a new pair of work shoes due to her family’s new puppy, which she adored but got rather angry with this morning. Two pairs of her shoes now sported several holes in them, about the size of her new puppies teeth. This meant spending her last paycheck on a new pair of sneakers for work, which would end up being pricey since they had to be comfortable. Overall, Arry’s day was not getting off to the best start.
Ariana was the type to go into a store, quickly get what was needed and head out. A fast paced shopper who didn’t pause to look at all the things she didn’t have money to buy at the moment. So, after only being in the mall for about fifteen minutes, she was quickly out of Payless with new sneakers and a lighter wallet. As she began walking through the mall toward the main entrance, she passed by the food court, her stomach giving a loud growl, having only had a bowl of cereal for breakfast. Figuring she had no where to be, she made her way to the subway line.
The good thing about shopping around noon on a Sunday, was that the mall had yet to really get busy, most of the younger generations still sleeping in and the older ones just getting out of church. This meant no line at Subway, taking only a few minutes for her teriyaki sub to be ready. Arry set her bag down on the table, taking a seat and unwrapping her sub. Before taking a bite, she took out her phone to text her boyfriend, a quick message about how she would be over after she finished up at the mall.
Her day had started off badly, but she expected it to be mostly uneventful, having no clue who was about to step into her life once again.

Money was never a consideration for a boy like Freddie. He always had enough to do everything he wanted. Including the overly extravagant purchase he liked to make every once in a while. It was even more so the case now that not only did he have his family’s money, but there was still a tidy some left over from his stint on broadway. What he should have been doing with the money was using it on a place to live, however his parent’s house was just so comfortable that why would he bother? He’d missed having people do just about everything for him. So he was going to spend the money any way he liked. Today it was on clothes. Unlike most young men his age, Freddie liked clothes shopping. He liked to look good, so of course having nice clothes went along with that. It was odd, because back in school his friends used to joke that he was the female in the relationship because he had more clothes then his girlfriend.
Thinking about Ariana caused Freddie to smile. Their relationship had seemed odd to some people. She hadn’t been a part of his usual group of friends. In fact, she hadn’t even gone to his private school. Freds had met her at a party one night, and had been smitten from that moment on. She was cute, and seemed really sweet. He’d chased her for a little while, then started dating for two years. Only breaking up when Freddie made the choice to leave town in search of his dreams. He hadn’t wanted to break up with her, but Freddie knew himself well enough to know that he couldn’t do long distance. It would have just killed him not to be physically with Arry. So he had broken up with her. And then hadn’t really spoken to her much. Honestly it would have been way too hard to be in constant contact with her, when his feelings were so strong.
He was wrong though, in thinking that ending it would make it easier. Or at least in thinking he’d get over her. He didn’t. Sure he slept with a few girls. Casually dated a few girls. But none of it really meant anything, and was basically just to pass the time. Now that he was back in town, the young man was anxious to see his girl again. Suddenly the racks of sweaters he was going through had lost his interest. Sighing, the young man left the store without getting anything. Making his way towards the food court. Perhaps a latte would lift his spirits. Without really paying much attention, he brushed passed Arry without giving her so much as a glance. Silly boy..

After tucking her phone away, Ariana lifted her sub, stopping half way to her mouth when someone caught her eye. The person had looked so familiar, but there was no possible way it could have been who she thought of. Setting her untouched sub back down, she turned in her seat to follow the man, her breath catching in her throat when she confirmed her original thought. Arry knew him very well, there was no denying it was Freddie.
The shock of seeing him kept her stuck in her seat, just watching as he waited in line, taking in his appearance and any little changes since the last time she had seen him. It felt like forever ago that he had left, but at the same time it felt like just yesterday they were together. Ariana had only had one boyfriend through out her four years of high school, that had been Freddie Fairfex.
When he had left for New York, she had been heartbroken but proud of him for following his dream, supportive of his choice to leave. She hadn’t spoken to him in ages, it was too hard to try and talk to one another, she would have never moved on if they had kept in contact. A slight wave of guilt crossed over her, she hadn’t even thought about him in a while, so consumed by her current relationship, work and school.
Ariana finally became composed again, forcing herself to get up and make her way over to where he was just getting his coffee. ”Freddie,” she said softly from behind him, feeling slightly nervous and excited all at once. She had no idea he would be returning, had no idea what he had been up to lately, if he even wanted to see her. The more she thought about it, the more she wondered if he had noticed her sitting there, maybe she didn’t know he was coming back because he hadn’t cared enough to tell her. Suddenly she felt awkward standing before him.

The voice startled Freddie. He had been completely caught up in his thoughts, and getting his warm caffeinated drink that he hadn’t heard anyone move up behind him. His first warning that someone was even there was his name being said. It wasn’t that he was a rude person who never bothered to pay attention to anyone else. It was more that he could just get so lost in his own mind he wasn’t aware of what was going on around him. It was a bad habit actually, Freddie knew that. People often got annoyed at him for zoning out in the middle of a conversation, just because something they had said happened to trigger a stream of thoughts off in Freddie’s head. Perhaps people were correct in calling him rude, or self centred. Oh well, that wasn’t his problem. They could think of him what they liked, he wasn’t about to change.
The voice saying his name should have been known to Freddie. It would have set up bells of recognition- no, fireworks of recognition. It should have made his skin tingle warmly and his stomach twist in tight nervous knots. For some reason though, the penny just didn’t drop. Maybe it was the fact that he had been thinking about her, so Arry was the last person je expected to see. Or maybe it was because he assumed if she was there he’d be drawn to her like a radar so it couldn’t possibly be here. Well, for whatever reason, the voice didn’t register in his mind. Casually, he turned around to see who was addressing him. Half expecting it to be some family friend from way back when he barely remembered. Surprised washed over him when his eyes found Arry. God. He’d forgotten how utterly breath taking she was.
Freddie stood still for a moment, eyes locked into hers. Heart racing in his rib cage. Arry. She was standing in front of him. Close enough to touch. A thrill ran down his spine at the thought. Without saying a word, or even thinking much about his actions, Freddie sit his coffee down on the counter, and pulled his ex into a hug. Wrapping his arms around her, pressing her as close as he could. Lifting her feet off the ground for a moment even. He just held her there like that for a moment. Discovering her all over again- the way her hair smelt, how soft her skin was. God. She was perfection. Slowly and reluctantly, Freddie set her down, pulling out of the hug. “God..” he murmured, running his hands down her arms gently until he found her hands. “I’ve missed you so much.” It didn’t occur to Freddie that his actions might have been unwanted and inappropriate, and right then he just couldn’t bring himself to care.

Never had Ariana expected to run into Freddie, she had long ago given up any thought of seeing him again. They had ended their relationship knowing their lives were taking two different directions, if the thought of bumping into him again had come up in her mind it had been pictured as far off in the future, when they had started new lives maybe been married and had families. The idea of seeing him just a few years later hadn’t come up, from what she last heard he was doing well up in New York.
When he turned to face her, the shock finally began to ease away, the reality that he was really here in front of her beginning to click in her brain. Quickly she relaxed, nerves leaving her, no matter how long it had been she was always comfortable around him. Next thing she knew, he had scooped her into his arms, hers wrapping reflexively around him. Being in his arms was just how she remembered it, comforting and safe, despite all the time that had past. Ariana couldn’t help but smile, a soft laugh escaping her lips as her feet left the ground for a second. It was exciting to be in his arms again, she remembered how lonely she had felt when he left, how she had even curled up in bed and cried the first few nights. For two years they had been insuperable, she knew him better than she knew anyone else, he had been her best friend as cliché as it sounded.
As she was let loose from the hug, a million questions began to flood her mind. There was so much catching up to do, not to mention she wondered why he was back at Capeside instead of off on Broadway. Arry had yet to really noticed that his hands had found hers, everything was so natural with him, plus her mind was full of questions and memories, her boyfriend had yet to really spring to mind. ”I’ve missed you too,” she replied honestly, although she had long since moved on, she had still truly missed him. Glancing back at the mostly empty food court, she slipped her hands from his before speaking. ”Are you busy? There’s so much we need to catch up on.”

Feeling her in his arms again had just felt so- right for Freddie. Like that’s where she belonged, and she should have always been there. The time apart hadn’t seemed to have changed anything at all as far as that was concerned. He was glad for that though. It would have upset the boy if it had felt awkward to touch Arry. That would have meant there was no spark left between them and oh God, he had wanted there to be a spark. Freddie wasn’t stupid though. He knew you couldn’t force something that wasn’t there. Or at least, he thought he knew that, but that was a whole separate issue again. Anyway, the point was that he had been worried he wouldn’t feel a spark and he’d have to let go of her. Which wasn’t something he wanted to do at all. He’d always had issues with letting go.
It should have been a sign or something to Freddie when she pulled her hands from his. A sign that all was not right and he was in for some bad news. But then, it seemed, letting go wasn’t the only thing that Freddie struggled with. He didn’t seem to know a bad omen when it was whacking him in the face with its over-sized pork sword. Then, that had a lot to do with the fact that he just thought far too highly of himself to assume anything really bad was going to happen to him so that when the thought occurred to him, he pushed it away quickly. He really needed to learn though, to watch out for the signs. Because then it might not be so traumatic for the young man when he was hit in the face with things without any warning, that he had paid attention to of course.
Anyway, he was too busy admiring how pretty she was to notice much of anything else. Grinning, he nodded. Then remembered that words should really go along with that nod. He was getting overly excited. That was a problem. “No no!” He said, with more intensity then he meant to show. “I have no plans what-so-ever and I’d love to catch up.” Freddie put a strong emphasis on the word ‘love’. His eyes growing a little more serious, boring into hers as he spoke. Turning for just a moment to re-collect his warm drink, he cleared his throat. “Would you like to go somewhere a bit quieter?” He raised an eyebrow, ignoring the fact that the mall was actually pretty empty. “I mean, it will be more comfortable to talk as well. These shoddy plastic chairs are so awkward to sit in you know.”
