Bethany was nervous. That was natural, right? It was one thing to talk to the boy via an instant messenger, but it was completely different to actually seeing him. What was she supposed to do now? Like, could she act just the same as usual.. Or would there be more expectations on her? Bethany had no idea what a boy expected from his girlfriend. She should have asked Luca before agreeing! At least that way she would know what she was getting herself in for. Maybe she could ask him now, after she had already agreed? Perhaps that would upset Luca though- make it seem like she was having second thoughts or something. That wasn’t something she wanted to make him think at all! Of course she wanted to be his girlfriend. It was just.. All very strange to the poor child. He would want kisses, right? Kisses and hand-holding and all that stuff. She could do that. She hoped..
Bouncing on her toes, Beth frowned. Really, she just wanted to see him. As much as her mind was freaking out, she still had enough sense to know that once she saw Luca again, she’d feel far more relaxed. The blonde Italian boy had as habit of that. All throughout her life, Bethany had been thankful for the calming effect her best friend, or well, boyfriend was more correct now. Anyway, she had been thankful for the affect her boyfriend could have on her. Truth was, he didn’t even have to be physically touching her. Just seeing him, or knowing he was there was sometimes enough for the brunette to feel a rush of relief. And she was fairly certain that this boyfriend thing could only really make that better. Now he really was the one person she was supposed to want to be around all the time. The one person who was always there for you. She only hoped that she could be that for Luca, too.
“ Stare fermi, bambino.” The Italian accent broke through Bethany’s thoughts, and she blushed at the woman’s chastising. Luca’s mother was kneeling on the lounge-room floor in-front of Bethany. Who was standing on a small stool, while the woman fixed the hem of the dress that had been made for the fair. All the anxious bouncing was probably making it hard for the woman to sew. “Sorry..” Came Beth’s sheepish apology, as her cheeks heated up, and she lowered herself from the balls of her feet to stand flat. The hem had come un-picked when Bethany had tried the garment on, and as much as she tried to tell Mrs. Romano that it was fine, her boyfriend’s mother had insisted that it need fixing. Considering that Luca had been no-where in site when the brunette had been welcomed in, she figured she had no choice but to let the woman fuss over here. “It’s just..,” she started, after a moment’s pause. “Where is Luca? I was supposed to meet him here to get my dress and then-“ She was cut off by Mrs. Romano’s affectionate laughter. “Patience, my dear.” She said gently, straightening up. “You want to look perfect when you see him, don’t you?” Bethany flushed. She did like the sound of that. Instead of answering though, she watched silently as the woman who was the closest thing to a mother she had left put away her needle and thread. As much as she didn’t want Luca’s mother to have to fuss over her. She liked these moments. Essentially, she was getting ready for her first date. Which was something her own mother should have been there for. Beth was thankful though. If she couldn’t have her real mother, this was just as good. Once the needle was away, Mrs. Romano turned back to the girl, and brushed some hair from her features. “Bellissima!” She proclaimed, before turning to call her son into the room. Leaving Bethany to step anxiously off the stool, trying to contain her blush.

The day had finally come. Today was the day that would be the first outing of Bethany Tanner and Luca Romano as an official couple. No pressure. Luca had been in his room all morning, almost refusing to leave the place. He was nervous. Sure, he had dated before but this was different. This was Beth. What if he went to fast for her or did something stupid? He knew that she was uncomfortable with this whole thing, she was not used to any of it. He would have to be careful with what he did. Was he allowed to kiss her again? Luca had absolutely no idea about how to approach this delicate situation. Of course, if he did not figure it out soon, the whole thing would simply blow up in his face regardless. He needed to make a plan of action.
Beth was already there. Luca could hear his mother speaking to the other girl as she made a few final adjustments to the dress. The poor blonde boy was nowhere near ready. Looking over at his bed he stared at the old style clothes that were strewn across it. His mother had spent so long sewing everything for himself and for Beth. It would be a waste to chuck a sicky now. He had no choice. He had to go through with this. In fact, he wanted to through with it, he was just scared. Everything was now so difficult. He had to make sure that he was perfect for Beth, that this relationship was absolutely perfect. He had to make sure that he was her knight in shining armour, especially today. No doubt if Wyatt was there he would be laughing at Luca as the blonde changed into the medieval costume. He felt strange, like he was out of his own skin. He felt like a character in a storybook like Prince Arthur or Robin Hood. Whoever he was, it was strange to him.
Luca Romano hurried down the stairs. At the very bottom he stopped to look in the full length mirror that was there. He looked strange. His mother had certainly done a very good job with the costume. Hopefully Beth’s would be stunning and beautiful. Even if it wasn’t, he knew that he would find Beth beautiful. He always did. He especially loved to see her in her skating costumes, but perhaps it was just the exposed skin that made his heart race when he watched her. He was pulled from his thought of Beth in a leotard when his mother came out. She smiled at him and nodded happily. Beth was ready. The woman then rushed up the stairs to finish whatever other work she had to get done. Meanwhile Luca took a deep breath and walked into the room.
Instantly his breath was stolen from him. His eyes widened as he took in the whole figure of Bethany Tanner. She was beautiful. The dress was absolutely one hundred per cent perfect. It fit her small skater’s frame perfectly and the colours were wonderful. Smiling, he walked towards her. “You look amazing Beth,” Luca whispered as he folded his arms around her, pulling her into a hug. Her hair had been washed that morning; he could smell the shampoo in it. It was so beautiful and soft and she smelt so delicious. Pulling away he smiled down at her. “Ready to go my lady?” Luca grinned turning to the side and offering her his arm.

Bethany took a deep breath as Lucas appeared. Cheeks flushing even more so. This was it. Their first date. Her first date ever, to be exact. And gosh, he looked so perfect. The brunette could feel butterflies starting to form in her stomach. It was pure luck of timing that their first date had ended up being the fair, but it was like a fairy tale. Bethany felt like a princess in her dress and Luca was her prince charming. Honestly in all her wildest dreams and fantasies, she never even thought it would be like this. It was the sort of thing that happened in movies, not in real life. And yet, here it was, happening in her life. How did she get so lucky? Well, she had certainly been through a lot to get to her perfect movie moment. It was nice, that she was finding happiness. Not that she wasn’t happy. She was, but she deserved this perfect moment.
The brunette grinned at his words. He really did have a knack for making her blush. However this time it was for all good reasons. His words truly warmed her heart, and helped calm her down a little. So did the hug, in fact. Opening her arms, Bethany slipped them around Lucas for a warm hug. Nestling her face gently into his shoulder. “You look so handsome..” She murmured in reply as she did. His hugs were one of the best in the world. Breathing in, Bethany was relieved that they still felt the same, his hugs. Everything between them was shifting, and she wasn’t sure she would handle it if his hugs felt different now. Awkward or uncomfortable. She needed that constant in her life more than anything. Especially if they were going to make it through the strange new world of kissing and going on dates. As long as she could curl up in his arms when she was over-whelmed, it would be okay.
Sighing a little, she let the hug break. Though, to be perfectly honest she’d have just been content to stand and hug the boy all afternoon. That would have been a perfectly good date in her opinion. However, she knew that wasn’t an option, so instead she just smiled up at her best friend and boyfriend as her arms fell away from him to fall to her side. What was she supposed to do now though? Would he expect more? Bethany just had no idea. All the anxious feelings that had faded away at the site were bubbling up again. Now that she was faced with the actual date part of the outing. The greetings had been the easy part. She’ could do this though, right?
Watching as he turned, Bethany followed suit. If she just took her que from Luca on what to do next she could get through the date. He wouldn’t lead her wrong. Grinning, the young woman linked her arm through his. “Why of course, kind sure.” Feeling a little silly, she let out a giggle. This was fun though. It didn’t seem much different to how they usually were. If dating meant they could still be silly together, then maybe it wasn’t going to be as hard as she thought. Feeling a rush of affection towards the blonde, Bethany leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek. A silent thank you for being so amazing to her. Pulling back, she looked around. Eyes searching for any site of Luca’s mother. “Should we say goodbye to your mother first?” Was that something you did on a date? Bethany wasn’t so sure. They’d always said goodbye to his parents before when leaving.

It felt nice standing there. This was a perfect moment. Not that there had not been any perfect moments before this one. All of his perfect moments, for as long as Luca could remember, involved Beth. She was always there with him through everything. She was his best friend and he was hers. But now it was more. Now they were a couple. Boyfriend and girlfriend. Hopefully Beth would be alright with that. I mean, it wasn’t like they were going to be having sex any time soon. So far they were just in the kissing and holding hands phase of their relationship. The ‘getting to know you’ part of their relationship had been dealt with years ago, they had just never moved into the next stage. But now they were there, ready to go on a real date. And because of this, the usually calm and confident and collected Luca was as nervous as hell.
“I hope you don’t mind, we’re walking. But thanks to our convenient location, it’ll only take ten minutes. You can blame my brother for the lack of a car.” Luca smiled down at Beth, his Beth. It was unfortunate that he could not drive her to the fair, but then again, things like this were always happening. He was certain that Beth would be more than used to walking. For some reason Peter had pinched two of the Romano cars and the third was with his father, who probably wouldn’t be turning up any time soon to drop it back. No matter, walking would make them a lot fitter, and Luca needed the fitness. A writer never got out that was for sure. Time always seemed to fly whenever he was with Bethy, she just did that to him, made him feel like they were the only two people on earth, like time itself had stopped.
Say goodbye to his mother? Luca had never really thought of that. When he had been going out with Ruby none of that had never come up. Probably because they were never at home. Had Ruby ever met his mother? That was beside the point. Turning towards the door he frowned. “Nah, I think it’ll be fine if we head off now. She got to see us both dressed up, we won’t bother her. She probably has stuff to do anyway.” Luca often worried about his mother. She did not have a proper job per say, she was simply a stay at home mum. There was nothing wrong with that, but with all the children out he wondered if she ever got bored. It must certainly be boring being at home all by herself. And Luca’s father was never home either, so that must make it even worse. Sure, she was always acting cheerful and happy, but Luca wondered if it was not all just a cover up for her real feelings.
Looking down at his girlfriend, Luca bent and kissed the top of her head softly. Smiling, he began to walk her out towards the front door. The day was quite warm for March, which was a nice change. Stepping out he led Beth down the street, hoping he knew the way. He did not have the most amazing sense of direction but when it came to Capeside he knew where pretty much everything was. The only time he had really gotten lost was when he was ten and his brother had left him at the supermarket and he tried to get home but could not remember the way. Thankfully he now knew the way from the supermarket to his house back to front so that would never happen again. “You ready for our first public appearance as an official couple of Capeside?”

Walking was fine for Bethany. In fact, she didn’t mind it at all. It was a lovely day out, and the fabric of her dress wasn’t so heavy that she was likely to get hot. Besides, walking was really nice.. and soothing. Bethany could use the calming action of a lovely stroll right now. Her nerves were all over the place. It would give her more time to get comfortable with the situation before they actually reached the destination. And it wasn’t like Beth wasn’t in shape. While her muscles were more elongated and lean- harder to notice, she was definitely in good shape. Her figure skating training made sure of that. It also gave her fantastic leg muscles but that was a different point completely. Smiling at Luca, she shook her head. “Oh of course I don’t mind. Walking is nice anyway.” It was sweet how concerned Lulu was of her feelings about the mode of transport. She was so lucky, really.
Truth be told, Bethany spent a lot of time with Mrs. Romano, and if she knew Luca’s fears, she would probably have been able to make him feel just a little better. Well, at least she never seemed lonely or bored to Beth. The woman was a constant source of information about what was happening around the town, because apparently instead of talking about books at her book club they spoke about the current gossip. She was always so busy too. Cooking for that person who just had a baby, doing something else for this person.. Beth could hardly keep up sometimes with all the things the woman did. She always seemed to have time for Bethany though. She would show her how to cook true Italian dishes, telling her that it was how her mother used to make it. Or sometimes they’d just talk, about anything. Sometimes silly and whimsical, and sometimes important. And sometimes, when Beth was up to it, about her mother. Luca’s mother had been her own mother’s best friend, and the young brunette felt connected to her mother when she was around Mrs. Romano.
She felt a little bad just leaving without saying goodbye, but Bethany figured she would see the woman later. If not that afternoon when they returned but some other day. Probably tomorrow, since she was hoping Luca would come watch her train the next day. She had a competition coming up, and she wanted to show her routine to an audience that wasn’t just her coach. Of course, Lulu wasn’t exactly unbiased. Anyway, she nodded. “Alright, well I hope she doesn’t mind.” Closing her eyes, Beth sighed happily at the kiss to her forehead. Was it supposed to make her skin all warm and tingly like that? Oh well, either way, she rather enjoyed the feeling and hoped he’d do it many more times. Which was probably very likely, all things considered.
Swallowing, Bethany fell into step with Luca as they made their way out of the house and into the street. Slipping her smaller hand into his. They’d held hands before- a lot of times before really. Now though, even that felt so much more intimate. Like it meant so much more. Butterflies were forming in her stomach once more, and she clung to his hand just a little bit tighter. “I... think I’m ready..” She told him, her voice not as sure as it could of been. “Luca.. What if they all look at us? And talk about us?” She asked, a slight edge of panic in her tone. She knew enough to know that the forming of a new relationship in Capeside was always the topic of gossip at least at first, and people always thought fit to weigh into things with their opinions on the pairing. She didn’t want people doing that, saying she shouldn’t be with Luca..

Luca could not help but smile. He here was, with Beth, his Beth. It was perfect. Sure, he could have done without the kind of dorky costumes but hey, that’s just what they were like. They did dorky things, and they did not care. They had never cared about any of that, about how they looked or about what other people thought. Maybe that was why what Beth said in reply was so puzzling. Luca had never thought that Beth would be so self-conscious. I mean, sure she was often like that when it came to something like her ice skating, but never when it came to them. But Luca could kind of see where she was coming from. They had never been out like this before, as a couple. The holding hands they always did but the kissing and the closeness and all that came with being a couple was so different and so new and not quite how other people had seen them before. This was Luca and Beth not as friends but as girlfriend and boyfriend. It was how Luca had always wanted it to be. Maybe he had not known that when he was younger but now, he knew that he had always wanted this. Now that he had it, he would never let it slip away.
“So what if they look at us Beth? People always look at us, that’s how it’s always been.” Luca smiled and pulled Beth closer to him. He would protect her from anything that Capeside – and even the whole world – would throw at them. He was her knight in shining armour, especially today. “Let them talk Beth. What could Hot Lips possibly say that could hurt us? Nothing. That bitch will never hurt us alright?” He paused. He probably should not have used such crude language around her. She was so innocent and sweet. He loved that about Beth, she was so beautifully innocent. Sometimes it was not a great thing but other times it was good to have such a nice mind around. She always offered a kinder, gentler point of view to everything.
In Capeside it was a big deal when two people started dating. The town was small and news travelled fast. Everyone knew everyone and everyone was willing to gossip. The younger generation were quite in tuned to what ‘Hot Lips’ was talking about. She was like their Gossip Girl type character and she was the one that either made you or broke you. Of course, Luca, being who he was, could not care less about what the gossiper had to say – even if it was about him. There were many people who cared a lot, but he did not see why anyone would bother with it. It was just stupid really, and he was convinced that much of it was just lies. Hot Lips could be anyone too. She – or even he – could be someone at their school or some creepy pedo. No one knew. It was probably just some joke that a crazy teen thought was cool. Sooner or later it would end. “Hot Lips can say whatever she wants, I don’t give a damn. I love you Beth Tanner and nothing will change that.”

Bethany bit her lip. The last thing she wanted to do was upset Luca. Or make him think she was ashamed of being with him, or that she didn’t want people to know or something like that. That wasn’t the case at all. She was proud to be Luca Romano’s girlfriend and was willing to tell anyone and everyone that they were now together. It was more that Bethany really disliked being the centre of attention. She hated public speaking or doing anything that meant people would be watching and judging her. Of course, the fear was a lot less when she was skating (and playing Piano to a degree, but that had a whole other set of issues attached), but in her general day to day life, Bethany avoided anything that would bring attention to herself. And she knew well enough that a new couple in Capeside was always like a shining beacon, Asking for attention.
Flinching a little at the boy’s language, Bethany bit down harder on her lip. Normally she probably would have chastised him gently on his use of the b word. Telling him that it really wasn’t very nice to say, even about someone like hotlips who wasn’t every nice to post people. However Bethany refrained. Luca already seemed a little bit upset and she really didn’t want to make it any worse. Besides, he probably already knew perfectly well what her opinion was towards him swearing so she wouldn’t have been telling the boy anything new. He had a point though. While being the centre of attention was not something Bethany liked, even if people did talk, what was the worst thing they could do? Nothing they could do or say would come between Beth and Luca, Luca just wouldn’t let it. And, Beth decided, neither would she.
Her heart fluttered at the next sentence. Wow. Honestly she didn’t think she’d ever really get over hearing him say that he loved her. For the rest of her life Beth thought that every time he said it, her heart would pick up just a little and warmth would spread across her cheeks. It was truly one of the most amazing feelings Bethany had ever felt, and she thought herself very lucky to be walking beside Luca. To be his girlfriend. Beaming at the blonde boy, Bethany paused in her steps to lean up as tall as she could and press a chaste kiss to his cheek, right beside the corner of his lips. “I love you too.” She confirmed as she broke the contact with his cheek. “I honestly do, and well..” She flushed a little. But shrugged. “I guess being at the centre of attention with everyone talking won’t be so bad with you there by my side.”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,320,true] WORDS 524 | TAGGED BETHY <3
Luca honestly had no idea why he had even agreed to any of it. Not the dating Beth part, that part he understood quite clearly. The whole, going to the medieval fair part was the part that confused him. Since when did he even like that kind of thing? Well, he didn’t. At all. But Beth did. And his mother had wanted to make Beth a dress for it ever since they had announced that they would be holding the fair in Capeside. Being Luca, he could hardly refuse either his mother or his girlfriend – even if she was just his best friend at that time. Regardless, he would do anything for her. So that answered that question. He had agreed to go for the fair in those costumes because he loved Beth and his mother greatly. That was a perfectly good reason to do something. How cliché his life had become.
He could tell just by the girl’s body language that the swearing had upset her. But she did not say anything. Maybe she knew him well enough to know that he would regret swearing in front of her. She knew him better than anyone in the world. It was weird, knowing someone so intimately and so well that you can tell what they will do next. It was like they were twins sometimes, they could feel what the other felt, they knew what they were going to say before they said it. It was crazy and Luca did not quite have the words to describe it, despite being a writer. But that did not matter, the point was that what he felt when he was with her was… perfect. He loved being around her, he always had. It was cliché and cheesy and maybe a little stupid but not to him. This was the kind of feeling people wrote novels about. This was the feeling that Luca would write about in his novel. It was the story of Beth Tanner and Luca Romano. A perfect love story. For now.
Broken out of his reverie by the words she spoke, Luca smiled down at her. “I love you more than anything in the world Beth. And if you want me to, I will stay by your side forever. Even if I screw this up and you hate me, I’ll always love you.” Luca was not quite sure why he said it, but it was how he felt. He had always told Beth how he felt, minus the initial feelings of love. He felt like he owed it to her to tell her something like that. In truth, he was terrified of screwing up what he had with her. That was the main reason he had been so scared to even tell her that he loved her. Their friendship had been the one thing he could always rely on. He could not remember ever having a proper fight with her. She was always there for him, whenever he needed her. If he screwed up and that disappeared, it would kill him. He needed her more than anything and he needed her to know that. |

Bethany frowned softly at his words. What could he possibly do that would ever make her hate him? Bethany simply couldn’t comprehend a thought like that. For one, Luca was ‘one of the nice ones’ that people always spoke about. He.. opened doors and helped little old ladies across the street and all those sorts of chivalrous things that most boys just didn’t do anymore. Bethany didn’t believe it was in the boy’s nature to do anything horrible enough that would make her hate him. Plus, it took an awful lot for Beth to completely turn on someone. She had a knack of always seeing the good in people (even when she shouldn’t) and always tried to explain away people’s bad actions. She had such a hard time believing people did things on purpose to hurt anyone else, or that motives were anything other than pure. It was a very naive view of the world and maybe she’d become jaded as she got older, but for now it was how she saw things.
Luca was at the centre of her very sheltered world, and she honestly hated the idea of that changing. Shaking her head, Bethany crossed her arms across her chest and attempted to pull a stern expression to her features. She really didn’t look very intimidating though- she never looked intimidating. “Now don’t you talk like that Luca Romano..” She started, almost as though she was chastising a child. “There is no way in the world you could ever do something that would make me hate you. Ever, okay?” She leaned up to press a small kiss to his cheek, her features softening. “You won’t mess this up, there is no way you can. You are kinda stuck with me now.” She gave a gentle laugh before throwing her arms around him in a warm hug. “No matter what happens, you will always be my best friend, so don’t you think otherwise.”
After hugging him for a moment, she pulled back to smile. “We should get going, or by the time we get there it will all be over.” Slipping her hand into his, Beth started to walk again. She was feeling much more at ease now. Because really- what had changed? They were still just Luca and Beth. She’d always felt this way about him without knowing it, so it wasn’t like her feelings had made a huge change and people had always seemed to think it was only a matter of time before something like this happened between the two. Squeezing his hand, she grinned a little more. Now she was starting to feel a nervous excitement instead of an nervous anxious. She wasn’t really sure how this whole date thing worked, but it wasn’t much different to normal right?
