Walking into the diner, he wondered why he’d ever come up with such a stupid idea. Lack of sleep – that was is only plausible excuse. He didn’t want Ruby to think that he was introducing her to his new girlfriend or anything. Though he knew Ruby was more mature now he was afraid she’d start humming kissing in a tree just to mortify him. Or maybe she’d take to their mothers more “mature” way of giving him the ever so subtle head tilt and eyebrow raise that said “this one’s a keeper, I like her”. He had no doubt that Ruby would like Lore, how could she not. But he didn’t want her pushing the relationship card later.
Spence wasn’t a relationship sort and he wasn’t going to burden someone as lovely as Lorelai with a shit head boyfriend that would likely just cheat on her. Because as much as he couldn’t see himself doing that to her, he’d done it to all his other girlfriends. Granted he often dated girls he couldn’t stand, but never the less. Taking a seat at a table that he’d be able to be seen easily he smiled at the waitress and told her politely he was waiting on two more. He drummed his fingers against the table rapidly in nervous anticipation. Then wondered why he was always early to things, was that lack of sleep too?

Oh God.
Lorelai didn’t know why she was so nervous, really. It wasn’t as though she and Spencer were romantically involved, or anything close to it- she supposed she just wasn’t sure why he wanted to introduce her to his sister. Meeting someone important to someone who was important to her was nerve-wracking. She wasn’t used to things like this. Although she wasn’t sure why, a large part of her was desperately afraid that if she didn’t receive the approval of this girl, she would lose a friend she’d come to cherish, and… That was upsetting. She also didn’t want anyone to dislike her in general. She just needed to breathe.
Wearing one of her nicer dresses, she arrived at the restaurant and stepped inside, glancing around for Spencer. Upon spotting him, she was pleased to see his sister had yet to arrive- good. She had a few minutes to breathe. Visibly nervous and subtly trembling, Lore made her way quickly over to him. She couldn’t bring herself to greet him with her usual quick hug and instead she sat down in the seat beside him. She had a wide variety of nervous habits, the most frequent of which playing with the hem of her dress. She grabbed a fistful of the fabric, frowning. ”What if she hates me?” she piped up, chewing on her bottom lip. ”I don’t want her to hate me.” Taking a deep breath, Lorelai looked worriedly up at him.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,305,true] Why was Spencer inviting Ruby to meet his friend? Ruby had wondered since the whole meeting had been set up. She must have been important to his brother- this girl. Ruby had never really met a lot of her brother’s girlfriends, so if he wanted Ruby to meet someone that wasn’t even his girlfriend.. Well, they must have really meant something. Ruby smiled softly. She had her suspicions about this whole thing, but she wouldn’t make any judgements. Not yet. She’d see how they interacted during the little dinner date. Honestly though, if her brother was happy then it really didn’t matter if Lorelai was a friend or more. Though, it would be nice for her brother to have someone in his life that was special.
Adjusting her headband, Ruby Checked herself out in the review mirror of her mother’s car. The blonde didn’t actually have her own car, but her mother trusted her enough to lend. She looked okay right? She hadn’t been sure of how to dress. If it was all very casual or something more. So she had gone for something that could seem like both depending on perspective. A white and pale green polka-dot skirt, and a white feminine blouse with some pretty detailing on the front and ruffled sleeves. Green ballet flats on her feet. Stepping out of the car, Ruby grabbed her purse and after making sure the car was locked, made her way inside. It didn’t take her long to find the table. Making her way over, she offered a gentle smile. “Hey.. Hope I’m not late..”

He looked over at Lore scooted into the seat next to him and a smile spread across his face involuntarily as she worried about what his sister would think of her. “you’ll be fine, she’ll like you” he said as the waitress put down the coffee pot and three mugs down in front of him, he wasn’t sure if Ruby drank coffee or not, she might be on a tea craze like a lot of the rest of the world saying, coffee’s bad for you drink tea instead. She always was a peach tea fan. It was sad how little he knew about his sister. “no one hates you” he finally said to try and make sure he got his point across to Lorelai, who was clutching her dress as if it were a life raft. He patted her hand with his before pouring himself a cup of coffee “do you want some?” he asked, still holding the pot in his hand. Everyone liked Lore and if Ruby could like the guy her parents kept whining about she would love lorelai and that was it.
Spence wouldn’t deny the guy sounded like an epic tool, but really if they kept telling Ruby he wasn’t good for her she was just going to want to hang out with him more. That’s how he was anyway. “you look nice by the way” he added quickly, even though he hadn’t seen the dress fully, Lorelai herself looked gorgeous as always, but it felt awkward to say for some reason. Thank fully Ruby walked in “you look nice too” he said with a smile as his sister took her seat “no, you aren’t late” he said. Still holding the coffee he held it up slightly “you want some?”, he himself was dressed fairly casually in the mist of skirts and dresses. He had a black tee shirt on with a gray vest buttoned over it and a pair of torn up jeans. Essentially he was Kurt Cobain dressed up. He reminded himself what a stupid idea this was, it’d just been something he threw out there on the phone with Ruby, he never thought she’d actually agree to it. That either of them would for that matter.

Lorelai’s main source of comfort had always stemmed from affection. Something about the touch of another always managed to help put her at ease better than anything else. Knowing someone was there just… Helped. While most may have counted her gestures towards something more than platonic, she didn’t really view cuddling and hand-holding as anything more than friendship when it was with a friend. So as Spencer spoke to put her at ease, she pressed her lips together and held her left hand out, palm-up, silently asking to hold his own hand. It didn’t cross her mind that his sister may get the wrong idea about the nature of their relationship- she wanted someone to hold onto her. She probably would have pushed to sit right next to him to cuddle up a little bit, but luckily enough, she realized that might be a little weird to do in mixed company, so she settled for the hand-holding. ”But she’s not just anyone,” Lore argued back weakly, ”She’s your sister. She’s important to you, so I really want her to like me.” She took a deep breath, slowly letting go of her dress when she saw Ruby walk in.
Lore took a moment to look the girl over- she was young, but very pretty. She also looked like a really sweet person. Someone that Lore would naturally want to befriend (although she made the effort to be everyone’s friend) no matter what. Although nervous, she smiled softly and stood up, extending her right hand across the table to his sister. ”Hi,” she greeted, glancing down at Spencer for a bit of reassurance, ”It’s really n-nice to meet you. I-I’m Lorelai.”
Well, that was smooth.
Biting her bottom lip, she slowly sat back down and silently nodded to Spencer in regards to wanting coffee. Goodness gracious.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,305,true] Ruby smiled at her brother’s compliment. Cheeks flushing a little. Even when it was from family, she always felt a little awkward and unsure of what to say when people complimented her. So instead of saying anything she just offered him a smile and a small shrug, before turning her attention to the other female. Wow, why was she so nervous? Ruby wasn’t intimidating was she? Giving an encouraging smile, Ruby reached out to shake her hand. “It’s nice to meet you too.” She greeted before sitting down herself. Smoothing her skirt over a little. Ruby hoped that her brother had some conversation topics planned, because between the seemingly shy Lorelai, and Ruby who was quiet at the best of times, well it could end up being a very silent lunch.
Shaking her head, Ruby addressed her brother. “No thanks, I’m more in the mood for something cool.” Glancing away, Ruby attempted to catch the attention of a waitress. They all seemed to be rather busy though. Frowning, she looked back at her brother and his friend, feeling rather uncomfortable. “So..” She attempted sheepishly, though she really didn’t have anything else to say after that, so instead she fiddled with her purse, hoping at least Spencer would jump in and say something.

Scoffing lightly at the nervous brunette he smiled “she’s not much different than me” he said casually as all of their differences ran though his head he added “except for almost everything” he laughed as he heeded her request to hold his hand by laying his on top of her tiny hand and threading his fingers through hers. He couldn’t understand why she was so nervous, but then again he knew his sister was nothing close to intimidating, unless you touched her camera and threatened to break it – which he had never done of course – right. It was his job as a big brother to torment his siblings just enough to give them a back bone, but not enough to cause them to become jaded and hostile towards him, that, was the rest of the world’s job. Spence was never a mean older brother in fact he thought he’d done a good job for the most part. Course he had his regrets… but honestly who didn’t… right?
He smiled as Lorelai stumbled over her words, he knew she was intimidated, but he also knew just how much she shouldn’t be. She looked at reasureance to which he mouthed “smooth” and winked giving her a thumbs up. He was teasing her of course, maybe not the nicest thing to do at the moment, but he couldn’t help himself. He obliged pouring her a cup of coffee. “Lore meet Ruby the girl who doesn’t know how take a complement, you two should get along just fine” he said with a smile implying they had something in common. Nether seemed to realize how lovely they were. “like peach tea” he teased his sister with a smile “I’m gonna have pecan pie, I think I deserve it” he smirked “but I shouldn’t have more, I’m watching my figure” he chimed again in a humorous way. It was obvious Spencer did not need to watch his weight and he’d probably put back seven pieces of pie… at least. “what about you guys?” he said sipping his coffee and smiled at a waitress who started over to the table.

Lorelai focused on the pressure of Spencer’s hand against hers, and, refusing to let it go, she used her other hand to draw absentminded figures on the back of his wrist. She frowned a little sheepishly when Spencer made the silent comment on her greeting- it was, after all, the first time he’d really witnessed her meeting someone new. She supposed the stuttering would have been ten times worse had she met him in any other situation. She was always a nervous, shy person. It had lightened up considerably at the coffee shop as she had learned to be pretty calm and casual when interacting with the customers, since there wasn’t much to just asking what they wanted. On the rare occasion when an actual conversation was struck up, it was a little easier for her to get into the groove than anywhere else. She was comfortable in her own little coffee shop, with people she was friends with serving other customers right in the same general vicinity. Befriending Spencer had been easier because of that, not to mention he was such a sweet guy in general. So no, he hadn’t gone through all that much of her stuttering. She really needed to relax.
Using her non-occupied hand to take a sip of her coffee, it occurred to her she needed to make more of an effort. Her focus was more on how she stated her question as opposed to the words themselves. ”So… Spencer says you’re still in school. What grade are you in?” she asked, glancing over to Spence as he made the comments about pie. Lorelai couldn’t resist a light chuckle as she reached over with her other hand to poke his stomach. ”I don’t know,” she teased playfully, ”I think I’ll just steal some of your pie. I’d hate for you to get carried away, after all- wouldn’t want you to lose that gorgeous figure of yours.” Squeezing his hand and shaking her head in a way to signify that she was definitely just kidding, she grinned down to her coffee, taking another sip.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,305,true] Ruby merely rolled her eyes a little at her brother. He knew her beverage of choice- she had to give him that. The sad thing was, Ruby didn’t exactly know his. She’d always been closer to their other brother, and Spencer had been gone for a while. She felt like they had both done a lot of growing up in that time, and she really needed to spend more time with Spencer- figure out who he was besides just her older brother. However she had time later to contemplate her relationship with her brother. Turning her attention to Lorelai, Ruby offered her a warm smile. She was making an effort, which Ruby appreciated. If the older girl had of been horrid towards Ruby, she probably would have just gotten up and walked out given her current mind-set. “I’m a senior.” She said with a nod. Often times Ruby forgot to force herself to say more than one or two words to answer a people. She’d learnt that it could come across as rude, not just quiet.
Raising her eyebrow at the interactions between the two at the other side of the table, Ruby watched in silence. They seemed rather.. like a couple. Even if they weren’t just yet, Ruby wouldn’t mind betting something was going to happen. She spent a lot of time watching people and taking candid photos, and when you did that, you started to see things in people that others often missed. That, and she’d always been rather good at reading people. Feeling a little awkward, like she was intruding on something, Ruby reached over and picked up one of the menus that had been sitting on the table. Flicking through it slowly. Though, she wasn’t even sure she was hungry to be honest..

In all honesty, Spencer’s biggest regrets in life were almost entirely centered around his siblings. He didn’t know them like he should, Milly, well he wasn’t even sure she really knew him at all. They’d talked on the phone, but every time he came home he felt as if he were just another stranger to her. Their relationship seemed about as antiseptic as the rooms they kept her in when she was sick. Though, it was rude to zone out while you were in the presence of others. So Spencer shook his head in an attempt to get his ravenous regrets off his mind. He’d tuned into hear the tail end of Lore’s question to Ruby and Ruby’s ever so Ruby-esc short answer. He fought the urge to pry into her love life, with that Bryce guy the Honeycutt’s were always complaining about, but he felt maybe it wasn’t the time to do such a thing and never the less he was distracted by Lorelai poking him in the stomach and teasing him.
He looked down “am I really that close to the tipping point?” he said obviously not worried in the slightest about his figure, it was like their gram always told the boys of the family, “it doesn’t matter what you look like, if you look good in a suit, you may as well be James Dean” and Spencer did look quite dapper in a suit. Spencer’s eyes fell on his sister again, they really looked nothing alike. “so, how are things with Bryce?” he asked, the last time the two of them spoke things didn’t seem to be going to well, but he was guessing since everyone was warning Ruby about him again, things must be going better and he wanted to be the one she could talk about him with, without worrying about judgment. The waitress came by giving Spencer a smile, he smiled back “ can I buy an entire pecan pie please” She wrinkled her nose at him and nodded turning to the girls to get their orders.

Lorelai offered Ruby a soft smile, nodding her head. Right, a Senior. Her own Senior year was not the greatest time for her- actually, it was the worst year of her life. Because of this, she hadn’t really taken advantage of all the things she was supposed to do- apply for colleges, focus on schoolwork, work towards a good future. But she figured that this girl wouldn’t do the same. No, anyone related to Spencer had to be remarkable. ”That’s exciting,” she responded with a grin, ”Do you have any idea what you want to do after you graduate? Planning to stay in Capeside?” she cocked her head to the side, genuinely interested.
After giggling a bit at Spencer’s order, shaking her head at him playfully, Lai glanced up at the waitress then back down to her coffee, contemplating for a moment. ”Uhm… Nothing for me, but thank you.” She never really ate much of anything, although she should have, and she was sure Spencer was aware of that. Hopefully he was, anyways. She would hate to be thought of as rude or something. But she normally got away on just a couple of tiny meals a day- Ramen Noodles, a salad. She didn’t need much, and she never felt very well after she ate. Lore probably wasn’t living a very healthy lifestyle, but she’d been doing it for years and she felt no real reason to change her ways.
If anything, a small part of her felt like she deserved to be unhealthy. Like it balanced out with what happened with Elliot. Not that she’d ever admit that aloud, of course.
She turned her attention to the conversation once more, but as it seemed like they were about to discuss more personal things, she kept silent. She didn't want to intrude, or be a bother, after all.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,305,true] Ruby raised an eyebrow at her brother. Bryce? What in the world? Before she could question him though, the waitress appeared to take their order. Trying to contain her bemused grin, Ruby shook her head a little at her brother’s order. Was he really going to eat most of a pie by himself? Sure, she had every plan to steal some from him, but she couldn’t eat more than a slice. He really was a pig, wasn’t he? Still giggling to herself, Ruby glanced at Lorelai. Nothing? That was.. odd. However, it would be rather rude if she questioned it, so Ruby left it alone. Instead, she turned to the waitress and offered her a smile. “Could I please get a bowel of fries with aloe and a peach iced tea?” If her brother was going to supply desert, then she may as well give them something savoury to share.
Once the waitress had nodded and left the table, Ruby turned her attention back to Spencer. “Uh, can I ask who Bryce is?” She asked, trying not to look as smug as she felt. She couldn’t help it really. It was amusing that he was trying to show an interest in her, but he was getting it all wrong. Glancing over to at the other girl, she let out a small giggle. “He’s trying to impress you, but he got the name all wrong.” She informed her. “Things with Bradley are...” Ruby let out a low sigh. “Really complicated actually...”

Spencer was beginning to worry that Lorelai might have a touch of anorexia with how little she seemed to eat. Maybe his presence made her nervous and adding Ruby in on top of that made it worse. Though, he had no intention of eating an entire pie left overs were the goal, he’d probably put back two pieces and snatch a couple of his darling and generous sisters fries. Winking at the waitress as she began to walk off he sipped from his coffee as his sister corrected his obvious name issue. Shrugging he spoke as if his mistake was a little importance “eh, three letters ain’t bad” a smile spread across his face before he began to plead his case more actively “it’s not as if his name is mentioned much, mom just calls him ‘that boy’ and dad calls him a ‘slimy bastard’ so…” it was true the Honeycutt family did tend to avoid the blonde boys name whilst at the dinner table as if the mere mention of it would cause everyone to become violently ill.
He hadn’t met the phantom named Bradley, but he knew why Ruby was into him. The kid had those classic good looks, the only reason Spencer knew this was because Ruby had a rather extensive collection of photographs that he was the subject of. Though, the young boy often didn’t look too happy in them, which meant one of two things, he was either often unhappy or he really didn’t like getting his picture taken, possibly both. Furrowing his brows as his sister continued to say things were complicated. Realizing Lorelai had no idea who they were talking about he turned to her to let her in to the conversation “Bradley’s Ruby’s boyfriend” he said not knowing that he was once again so very wrong. “complicated eh?” he wasn’t normally nosy, but there was something about these two’s relationship that made him rather curious about things “do I need to kick anyone’s ass yet?” he asked as he sipped his coffee
Though, he’d never been a violent guy, he was a big brother and if anyone hurt any of his siblings he was more than ready to make an exception. One could easily think he was trying to impress Lore with his brotherly ways, but in all honesty he was really just being an idiot of an older brother, who found it entertaining to tease his sister while offering to do his brother duties.

As her question to Ruby went unanswered, Lorelai sank back and half listened to the conversation, although focused the majority of her attention on her coffee cup. She wasn’t sure the proper way to act in this situation- on one hand, she didn’t want to seem disinterested, but on the other, she didn’t want to seem like she was eavesdropping in on a conversation they didn’t want her to listen in on. So she fought to look like she was on the edge of both, though she was paying attention, glancing up every now and then. When the teenager corrected Spencer and made note of him trying to ‘impress’ her, Lore merely let out a small giggle, turning to eye him for a second. She knew he wasn’t really making any effort to impress her- he had no reason to, they were already good friends.
She kept silent for a little bit, offering a nod when Spencer clarified who exactly this Bradley boy was. Lore was seemingly confused about why the boy seemed like such a sore subject, but then again, she had been rather spoiled with Elliot. Her parents had watched them grow up together and were happy when they got together as an actual couple. Lorelai was getting a little self-conscious, now, because while she didn’t feel like she belonged in the conversation, and didn’t want to interrupt, she was afraid she was being too quiet as well. She was always quiet. Feeling the need to pipe up with something, she took a deep breath and in a soft voice said, ”How long have you guys been together?” Seemed innocent enough.
Goodness, she was far too awkward for this.
