-- FLETCHER JACK DONOVAN !
-- NAME: fletcher jack donovan -- NICKNAMES: fletch -- AGE & BIRTHDAY: 27 & october 13 -- BIRTH PLACE: capeside -- ORIENTATION: heterosexual -- OCCUPATION & SCHOOL GRADE: photographer -- PLAYED BY: james franco
-- PERSONALITY !
-- CURIOUS: He’s always had his nose in places he doesn’t belong. Growing up his curiosity was sort of misplaced. He’d snoop around the house, trying to discover new things. He was the kid that would dig as many holes in his backyard to find dinosaur bones as he could before his mother caught him and gave him a punishment. He’s had a thirst for knowledge, though also misplaced. In school he rarely paid attention and rarely did his homework. He did enough to pass and not fail miserably, but the problem was that he just didn’t care about the things he was learning. He spent time studying ancient civilizations, the great leaders of the world, obscure animal habitats, endangered species, and the like. Eventually, his curiosity took him halfway around the world. -- RESTLESS: He almost verges on ADD, but it’s not his attention that’s the problem: it’s the fact that he can’t sit still. He actually has incredibly focus, that proven through the painfully long times he’s spent trying to get one single photograph, and puts it to what he believes is good use. Fletcher just can’t be tied down to one spot for the rest of his life. When he thinks of staying in the same house when he’s old and wrinkly, he gets sick to his stomach. There’s just something so...prison-like to the modern day tradition of life. He hates it. Even when he was traveling, he didn’t stay in a single place for more than three months. When he does find something interesting, such as a culture or an ancient ruin, he will take his time to investigate. Fletcher will try to get as much detail as he can and suck the marrow out of whatever it is he’s found, but when he’s done, he’s done, and he’s on to the next interesting thing. -- UNSYMPATHETIC: Fletcher isn’t the most sympathetic person in the world. That’s not to say he’s a giant ass who doesn’t give a damn about other peoples’ feelings, he just doesn’t have them at the front of his mind. He’ll give you a hug if you’re sad and will try to listen when you’re upset or angry, but that’s about as far as it goes. He sees the world on a larger platform and doesn’t really have the patience for the problems of the individual. In addition, in his travels he’s visited places where people live in conditions not suitable for a toy bear, and has seen what real hardships are like. When he revisits the more Western version of life, he finds the complaints of people he talks to to be rather...self-absorbed and pointless.
-- LOVES: photography, traveling, the rainforest, wild animals, storms, sleeping outside, seeing the stars outside of the city lights, foreign food, anthropology, the way evolution has changed creatures, snakes, bugs -- HATES: staying in one place, cars, ethnocentricity, movie theatres, amusement parks, birds, hippos, snarky monkeys, bug bites, itchy socks, holidays
-- HISTORY !
Fletcher has been restless since he was born. He was a finicky baby and never sat still, effectively driving his parents nuts. He was the youngest of four children and was the only boy. His three older sisters had mixed feelings about getting a baby brother. The oldest didn’t care, the middle wanted a brother to bother, and the youngest didn’t like that Fletch took away her position as the baby of the family. He was a bit of a brat growing up in the Donovan household. He got into things he wasn’t supposed to and called his sisters names. He opened the Christmas presents he found in his parents closet and he always took the last cookie in the jar.
While he mellowed out as he grew up and became less of a pain in everyone’s ass, he didn’t stop being restless. He never really felt like he belonged in Capeside; rather, he sort of drifted along. He was in Capeside in body but his mind was always elsewhere. When he wasn’t hanging out with his friends or jumping between part time jobs, he was watching documentaries about far off places or running through town taking pictures of things he found interesting. He had a girlfriend throughout high school, Thalia, but he wasn’t quite sure if a relationship was really what he wanted. He cared for her, but he wanted to get out and see the world. It wasn’t what she wanted, unfortunately, and after he graduated he did stick around for awhile. However, once Thalia finished high school and had no desire to go anywhere, Fletch called it quits.
Though he never went to post-secondary school, he started to work with the local paper as a photojournalist. It earned him enough money, as long as he did boring family photos on the side, to rent a small apartment. For a few months after he broke it off with Thalia, he tried to get his life focused. The only problem was, he couldn’t think of how he wanted to spend his time when he was in Capeside. One day he was watching a documentary on monkeys and decided that’s what he wanted. Not the monkeys-- although it would be awesome to have one-- but the experience, the land, and the exoticness.
After a lot of begging and pleading and convincing, he got a job working with a travel magazine and he was on a plane to Africa. For two months he spent his time in near seclusion, tracking various animal herds and taking photos. He was almost trampled by a hippo, those vicious creatures, but even that didn’t deter him. He loved it. The bugs didn’t bother him, the threat of getting eaten by a lioness didn’t phase him, and he didn’t care that he didn’t speak the native language. He travel around the continent for a year, learning phrases of wherever he was at the time in order to survive. He loved throwing himself in other cultures, even if he wasn’t a true anthropologist.
Over the next few years, he traveled all around the world. He worked with the original travel magazine that hired him, but also other publications. The highlight of his travels was when National Geographic asked for the rights to one of his photographs of a rare bird in the Bornean Rainforest. He almost died and went to Heaven right there. On a strange turn of events, he found himself in Italy-- normally he avoided touristy places-- and ended up meeting the woman that would soon be his fiance. He was crazy for her and had this idea that she’d travel with him wherever he’d go.
Yet, in the end, he found himself back in Capeside. Fletcher is starting to lose hold on the relationship but he’s in the process of convincing himself it’s the right thing. Just because he’s back home doesn’t mean he loves his fiance any less. At least, that’s what he tells himself.
